does this only work on a fresh game?
It's true that some things get "locked" in your save. But that's not the case with the contents of these mods, swap all you like.
You could tweak the colors with an image editor.
Yes, what 2CRI is doing is questionable, I doubt he/she asks for permission and you can't just use the contents of a mod for a workshop mod without checking compatibility.
The Handmaiden mod doesn't contain any file that is in the other mod, so they should work alongside each other.
