They are "almost identical" in balance terms and in the position they occupy in the army. There is not such a "one is so much better than the other that it needs to be reduced by a whole 3rd to remain balanced", but one it's a bit better in some stats and a bit worse in others but, if you check the stats in the encyclopedia you can see the diferences are not "so much".

Well if they are "almost identical", yet one is so much better than the other that it needs to be reduced by a whole 3rd to remain balanced, I'd say that would warrant having both units. The Minamoto Samurai can serve as an upgraded "elite", maybe a little more expensive, version of standard foot samurai.

First, what i'm gonna tell you is what i remember, and i'm not 100% sure of all. In vanilla, the number of soldiers in a foot samurai unit is 90, while the minamoto samurai unit have 60 soldiers. The reason is because they are buffed. One of the minamoto (i think it was yoritomo) has a buff in reload and range, making them superior to the normal samurai, as it can outrange every other foot samurai unit. The other have a buff in melee defense, melee attack and charge, what means that, once the ammo is gone, they have advantage against the enemy. And, as far as i remember from the test i made, the advantage was so big i decided to reduce the amount of soldiers to 60.

Well if they are almost exactly the same, then the disparity between Minamoto samurai sizes and vanilla unit sizes is unwarranted. With 1.5x units, they are 90 while vanilla is 137. I don't know what the difference in 1x unit size is, but it should be the same mathematically.

@bh5496 Well, first this mod is only tested with defaults unit size (1x). Second, the samurai in rots aren't a "front line unit", but an archer unit. You must keep them behind the levys and they will destroy the enemy from the distance. Only use them in close combat when they are without ammo or to flank enemies. Never again many enemies (check the enciclopedia, where it says: Vulnerable to massed levy troops). And third, what sense have to been able to recruit 2 units that are almost the same?

Alternately you could just increase the troop count of the Minamoto samurai. With darthmod 1.5x unit size, 90 is a bit small for a front line samurai unit and so is 60 for cavalry. Maybe increase the count of their foot samurai to 100 or 120 and the cav to 75 or 80?

Could the Minamoto be allowed to recruit regular foot samurai?

still my favorite mod of all time. I wish their were more Genpei mods =/
