Yeah autism is a tiny pinch of smarts and a whole load of downsides... at least my brand of it is.

@VexTheHex03 very true! would love to see an added variety that shouts out the tendency of some autistic people to be hyper empathetic. that said, this is super interesting and like @Avarice said adds some interesting variety (and I'm pumped to see the variety) though it's impossible of course to cover the whole spectrum :)

other ideas for varieties I think would be cool, just because I'm here and autistic and love rimworld: increased manipulation, DOUBLED psychic sensitivity and increased break risk, decreased social/increased animals skill!!! (gotta shout out that autistic stereotype that we all like animals more than people. not entirely wrong), increased psychic sensitivity and sight and hearing (maybe with a low grade pain level to mimic sensory disorder)

Not ALL autism is a social hinderance, by the way.

Aspie supremacy from TurtleShroom.
ThePastaManCan🤷‍♂ 4 Dec, 2021 @ 12:43am
I'm autistic and its called a spectrum for a reason Shroom. :L
Avarice 16 Nov, 2021 @ 4:51pm
It's impossible to make a autism mod cover the whole spectrum... so Don't try! This adds some interesting spice to the game,

pain shock threshold for example, one of the big hints my brain was wired a bit "differently" was when I took a HOT plate out of the microwave that was used to cook about 4 bags of popcorn. My reaction was to turn around and place said plate on the floor, It took a bit for the blisters to heal from that one.

name change? hope you didn't have to jump through too many hoops making people happy with the name, as a person who is autistic and who is playing a game where I can make human leather seats for all I care the name could have been "tard addanator" infact it would have gave me a laugh.
TurtleShroom 6 Sep, 2021 @ 8:38am
In terms of motor skills, savantism is an exception, not a rule.

@all

Minor update to future proof the mod name, will no longer change.
Ollie-Raven 25 Aug, 2021 @ 9:21am
@TurtleShroom Many autistic people have great motor skills. Many excel at activities that involve having good motor skills such as playing instruments, having very professional handwriting, touch typing etc. Its completely dependent on the individual. I am not neurotypical (I do not have autism) and I have worked closely with many young children - teenagers who were on the spectrum. Their motor skills completely varied from one another.
TurtleShroom 12 Aug, 2021 @ 1:32pm
I hope that your father will make a full recovery from whatever ails him. I wish you and your family good health going forward.
TurtleShroom 12 Aug, 2021 @ 1:30pm
{ PART 2/2 }

Also, and I know this from experience, autists tend to wander around and particularly wander off. I personally feel that the Wander Around Mental State should randomly happen to some autists with these Traits.

Lastly, there's the motor skills. Unless the autist is an idiot savant in a task requiring it (which would increase it), the Trait should decrease Manipulation and slow down Crafting, even for idiot savants: my hands tremble when I try to do the finest of skills (like threading a CAT-Five cable by hand or putting things through the eyes of needles).

I have autism myself and find this to be a very interesting Mod. I like how you represented the higher orders of autism (such as Aspergers and PDD) in this Mod. However, Autism doesn't increase social skills. It is, by definition, a social impairment. That is perhaps the highest hall mark of the entire spectrum of the mental illness and is almost universal in every case.

What's missing, though, is severe autism. To represent medical retardation, there should be a form that eliminates the Social Skill entirely, as well as a host of other skills, while greatly increasing a random skill (perhaps to the twentieth level) and adding a Major Passion to represent idiot savant behaviors.
Deádáss 8 Aug, 2021 @ 3:56am
Thank you so much. I figured this game was missing something especially since psychological traits are a thing. I like to see how my autistic pawns handles life in the rim.

I'm autistic an i find this mod interesting.
PhoenixDIE 29 Jul, 2021 @ 2:30pm
Man, i have a son who is autistic and im glad to see a mod that brings him into a game for me :D and im glad to see how you represent your mod. Well done good sir. Keep up the good work.

I have a son with autism. He is the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm so proud of him that i always make a pawn with his name. Now he will be complete in my rimworld plays. Thank you, really.

I just ask that you be patient, my father is in the hospital and work has been overwhelming, so my time for modding is limited right now.

Interesting mod, will be adding it. Nice to see if wasn't a troll mod.

As a father of an autistic son, and I'm currently getting checked out for autism myself, I respect your work and previous comment re Asperger's.

Some people identify with it because that's what the diagnosis was. I understand that. But the diagnosis is being phased out for a general ASD one in a large number of cou tries, because of the awful association it has to an evil, evil man.

It's not meant to disenfranchise anyone who identifies with the Asperger's diagnosis, just an acceptance that times have moved on and we now can think more critically about various aspects of life, such as naming a diagnosis after evil people.

But, again, well done mod that seems to strike a nice balance and I'll be adding to my play through.

i was really expecting a troll mod from the name, but reading the description, i really like this! i'm autistic and it's nice to see something about us that isn't hateful
Desmond 8 Feb, 2021 @ 9:48pm
corvis is exactly right, it's actually surprising how often i see this comparison now but it's pretty accurate
Nemo 5 Dec, 2020 @ 3:14am
(Apologies, I don't see a way to edit my comment. Just wanna make it clear I wasn't asking you to add the term back or anything. You do you c: )
Nemo 5 Dec, 2020 @ 3:13am
The way I see it, you can visualize people's abilities to perform various tasks (socialization, executive control, motor control, etc) as a set of sliders, with "neurotypicals" having their sliders around the default setting, whereas people on the spectrum have more extreme settings. I see Aspergers as one particular presentation (or configuration of sliders) of the spectrum.

My two cents, as someone who was diagnosed just last January. Was honestly expecting this mod to be a lot more troll-y. Pleasantly surprised. Would be cool to see different variants, as a way of showing different special interests or abilities.
SpookyBlush 28 Nov, 2020 @ 8:43pm
Thank you for this great mod. I'm sure you don't get enough praise for it.
SpookyBlush 28 Nov, 2020 @ 8:42pm
@Sir Edwin
That's really not at all correct.
troopersmith1  [author] 25 Nov, 2020 @ 4:28pm
@[CGC] Moreton [95th]

I understand that a lot of people aren't offended by the term Asperger's, but some are. It costs nothing to remove those references to please those people, and (most) everyone else isn't going to be upset by the removal, so it is a net gain.
Moreton 25 Nov, 2020 @ 2:51pm
I have aspergers, I don't think you need to be worried about using the term. I've never met somebody else with aspergers who is offended by the term, I think most of the people who are offended by it probably haven't been disagnosed with it. (y)
✪Polezy 31 Oct, 2020 @ 12:50pm
please add back aspergers references

@all

I will be updating all of my mods over the weekend, provided any required mods are updated. Please be patient until then.
Sir Edwin Buttwhistle 22 Jul, 2020 @ 9:24am
spoiler words like moron and idiot are technical terms denotating IQ, same with retarded; however, idiot and moron are much lower IQs than retarded so if you ever use the words idiot or moron it is far worse than calling someone retarded.
troopersmith1  [author] 4 Jul, 2020 @ 5:26pm
@All

Mod updated to reflect more modern terminology and remove references to Dr. Asperger, as requested. Non-steam version will be uploaded soon.
troopersmith1  [author] 21 Jun, 2020 @ 9:56am
@All

I will be reworking the mod to use more modern terminology over the next couple of weeks when I have time off work.

@A FUCKING WHITE KNIGHT

I will not tolerate hateful discourse of any kind on my pages. If you cannot speak civilly I will remove your comments. You have been warned.
SpookyBlush 5 Jun, 2020 @ 6:52pm
couple comments to mod author, as well as individuals in the comments, from an autistic individual.
1: aspergers is an outdated term, and was phased out of the DSM. it'd be grand if you changed it to 'autism' instead of 'aspergers' as Dr. Asperger was kind of a Nazi. So yeah. maybe ask the mod authors permission first.
2: the only people who really have a right to call an autistic individual retarded is the individual themself, by way of reclamation of problematic slurs to describe oneself and thereby make the term positive for that individual.
3: this mod is an interesting idea. thank you very much.

I think this mod is very good for the community. My youngest brother is retarded, so I sympathize with those that have this hardship and will give the mod a try. Thank you.
troopersmith1  [author] 31 Mar, 2020 @ 5:27pm
If demand is there, I can do a revamped version with updated terminology and new artwork to reflect that.
troopersmith1  [author] 31 Mar, 2020 @ 5:24pm
@zaune_thegreywyvern

This mod does use some outdated terminology, such as Aspergers and PDD-NOS, however those carried over from the original mod for 1.0, which I revived. I wasn't sure if it was my place to change them. Personally, I would have just called the entire spectrum Autism to avoid confusion if nothing else.
zaune_thegreywyvern 31 Mar, 2020 @ 4:42pm
This is a really impressive attempt at a realistic portrayal of the autism spectrum within the limits of the game engine. Many people on said spectrum would probably rather you called it "Autism" instead (turns out the original Dr Asperger was a Nazi sympathiser) but full marks otherwise.
RaynDx 31 Mar, 2020 @ 6:06am
seems im the first set of stats.
