If you're storing a copy of a card instead of a card, and you can always destroy the stored card, what's the reason for having the first option where you leave nothing behind?

I really dislike the chinese translation when you meet this event with no cards put here. It is an internet slang which compelety doesn't fit in this game.

Also, just in case you want to check what card is in that event:
1. Go to the ...\steamapps\common\SlayTheSpire\preferences" folder
2. Look for a file called STSPlayer (no file extension)
3. Open it in a text editor (notepad, VSCode, whatever)
4. Look for "NOTE_CARD".
5. It should list the name of the card there, and you can change it to a vanilla card if you need to.

Aerion, I ran into the same issue a couple days ago. At least for me (and some others), I found that this mod wasn't actually what's causing it. Turns out it was the Conspire mod, which broke due to changes in BaseMod. However, it was fixed yesterday, so try launching it again today after ensuring all your mods are up to date.
If it doesn't work, try disabling Conspire in the launcher next time you run your game with mods. If that still doesn't work, then try disabling A Better Note when you launch to see if it's really this mod's issue.

Enabling/Disabling mods in the launcher is generally the best way to find out WHICH mod is actually causing the issue. It could be an individual mod, or a combination of conflicting mods.

Ah, noticed there's a bug report thread... But I guess it's NOT really a bug report, more of a general request for help. The 'bug' is probably user error, it's just that it'd be a pain to fix the hard way so I'm hoping there's a shortcut.

When I try to start the game in my main profile now, it crashes with a "Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: basemod.patches.com.megacrit.cardcrawl.events.NoteForYourself.MissingCard"
(I'd try harder to provide relevant logs, etc., except I think I already know the problem:)
I've probably removed the mod that added whatever card I've currently got stored.
However, I (apparently incorrectly) thought it'd be a mod from another profile, so I've tried grinding through runs to get the event so I could replace it. (Turns out, there's a console that makes it so much easier), only for it to not solve the issue when I'd finally gotten it replaced with a basic Defend! (Presumably it's stored per profile or something, precisely to avoid this issue.)
Now I don't remember what mod's card is in there...

Is there some way to erase the mod's 'memory' of what's in there?
I tried to search for where the mod keeps its 'notes', but even the config seemed empty.

i just recently posted this on the blackbeard mod (which i think was meant for the Replay the spire mod), but was just wondering, if they are not able to or not making updates anymore, would it be something you might be able to help tweak in future?

but basically is 1 sunken ship event which you can get a ship item relic to help you block, but if you have it already, you get nothing, so was asking if the last event button could instead let you find a gold coin or some gold :)

I appreciate your compliment. I recommend you remove the mod, as it seems that you do not agree with the premise of the mod, and that's fine. I explain the purpose of the changes above, so I will not repeat them ad nauseam, however I will note that the base event doesn't allow what you're suggesting either. If you have stored a curse, you have removed your ability to remove a curse in the future, and you will now always receive one until you store another card. This mod fixes those issues.

Wow, I just noticed the formulation "store a copy".
You should leave the possibility to remove a bad card. Your version is not better, you've just got rid of the flexibility we had before.
What if the player doesn't have any decent card to keep for another run? What if their priority at this point is to get rid of a curse or a strike?

If you're planning to keep it like that, I'll just remove the mod.
I like your other mods tho.

That is the intended result. That is explicitly what the mod is changing. What you seem to want is the base behaviour of the event without the mod.

Replacing the card with another one from my deck doesn't change anything, the card is still in my deck afterwards.

After each time you run the MTS launcher, a log file is saved at "{path to steam}/SlayTheSpire/SendToDevs/mts_process_launch.log" where your steam games are stored. It's likely you've played since getting that crash, so the log will have been overwritten, but the next time it crashes, you can just copy and paste ERROR section of the log (which will be at the very end)

Hi, it's been a while since I've looked at this mods code, but I can't recreate your issue. If you want to post the crash log in the bug reports thread, I will look more in-depth. Otherwise, I'd assume it's due to other mods incorrectly forcing the event and not closing the battle event that was previously loaded. (which is a known bug that I can't do much about)

At the moment it doesn't remove the card that I wanted to "store" (when choosing the third option, where you destroy the stored card). Had this issue several times. But cool idea nontheless.

Hi. That's certainly not an incorrect perspective, and I think for some players that creates meaningful gameplay choices. For most players, however, my data has shown that the base event functions as a once per save file removal, and then is a dead event every time after. Even with this improved functionality, 24% of players choose to Ignore the event.
If you enjoy that choice, I encourage you to play without this mod, however for most players what you describe does not create a fun choice, and creates an unsatisfying gameplay mechanic.

I disagree with your design philosophy. Putting a good card into the wall and taking a bad one is what makes the event so interesting and such a tough choice. Removing that element means removing the meaningful choice the player makes.

I had the mod disabled for a few days now, I'll try to reenable it and see where it takes me. I was too lazy to actively hunt it down for logs, I'll get back to you if I run into the issue again. If I don't, assume that it's all good :steamhappy:

Hi! Thank you for your feedback. As with the others, I can't do much unless you post a crash log (preferably to the bug reports thread). Are you sure you're updated to the latest version? That was the last person's issue. The other person never got back to me, but other people are logging successful storing with no card stored, so there's something unique to your situation that I'll need to see your logs to determine if the generic fixes don't help.

I'm able to consistently recreate the issue, it causes an exception and then the game closes. A bit late to the party, but this should help at least a bit. Crashes with other mods as well. No card stored.

I had no card stored already and I was trying to store base game Watcher cards...I have only this and some other qol mods currently enabled...and I don't have time to get you the crash logs...it's your mod causing the problem though because the game worked fine once I turned it off.

Hi Lilith. As with Vasher, if you have the crash logs, I would appreciate if you could post them in the bug reports thread. What other mods do you have installed? The mod works fine with most mods, and currently I am still receiving successful reports from runs with a wide array of modded cards. Are you sure it works on any card? What is your stored card?

Vasher is correct; the game now crashes when attempting to store ANY card. I am using other mods, but none of them would cause the game to crash when attempting to store a card with this altered event...except for this one.

this really needs to be in the vanilla game tbh. The regular event is just bad, I put a strike in there forever ago and will most likely never take it out.

Hi, all!
I have received enough feedback regarding the 'Take & Give' option that I have looked into the option and decided to make a slight adjustment. In order to preserve the experience for players who prefer the current implementation I have also added an option to use disable this change.
The option currently allows for the player to store a copy of the card they just received from the same option, which many people have asked if this was intended or a bug. It was initially intended, but upon further consideration I have opted against this decision.
The new behavior will be enabled by default, so players who wish to use the older version be aware you must disable the option for it in the settings.

"I understand this place~" Unlocked by having Madness in your deck. Guarantees at least one future recurrence of the event, where the stored card will be upgraded by energies of the Beyond that only the insane can perceive.

"I've figured this place out." Unlocked by having /rejected/ Madness, choosing to [Focus] instead. Adds an option to duplicate a card by waiting a moment for your future self to place it there. Yay for temporal weirdness!


I can't remember right now what the third option in the [Embrace Madness] event is, but remind me or throw me another event and I'm sure I can come up with a hook for it.
The idea of randomly making a copy of a card trips over my realism sensibilities a little too hard. However, the option of destroying the card is a great idea, and the two things put together triggered a few ideas for variations based on having encountered other events.


"When did I put this in here?" Unlocked by having read the ancient text that messes with your memory. Temporarily replaces the option of storing a card with the option of taking or destroying a random (native? colourless? either?) card whose rarity probably depends on ascension. Taking or destroying one of them restores the "store" option in future encounters.

"I should try that one spell..." Unlocked by having had a good read in the forgotten library. Replaces the "store a card" option with "store a copy of a card", as in the current mod.

"I seem to have cut myself last time...how fortuitous." Unlocked by having Bite in your deck. Adds a one-time option to upgrade a Bite (or perhaps all of them?).

Hi, I have added an option in the config menu to disable the Ascension requirements of the event. To access this, on the main menu of the game select the Mods option, then select A Better Note, and click the "Config" button near the bottom. This will bring up the options where you can select to disable the Ascension requirements.

I speak only for myself, but I would enjoy a configuration option to bypass the restrictions. I pretty much exclusively play on the highest Ascension available to any given character choice, so not being able to benefit from this mod (or the base event) has always been a bummer.
