I can't get to work. In fact I can't get the "Custom Illumination" mod to work with the newest patch. As soon as I try to access periscope, binoculars or UZO the game freezes until I zoom out with the mouse wheel.
Would really love to have a mod that illuminates the bearing markers at night. The UZO and scopes are almost impossible to make out.
The illuminated bearing texture is generated by the game, there is no way to make a custom one. The patch that added light propagation (2025.1P5?) added a darkening mask to simulate the light propagation. AFAIK the shader layers the various textures and post processing effects similar to Photoshop. Regular textures (and the generated bearing illumination) are behind the darkening light propagation layer which is behind illuminated scope textures among other effects. I have no knowledge or ability to modify the shader.
Only way I know to mitigate that is to use the scope with the lightest light propagation mask aka the Observation Scope.
I am using this mod, Custom Illumination, and More Accurate Scope Wide. Since this one is the one most directly responsible for the bearings I figured it was the best place to have this discussion.
I see other users have recently complained about the dark markings in these comments and in the comments on Custom Illumination. It's true that the angular marks in the scopes weren't illuminated (AFAIK), but the *BEARING* indicator definitely was -- it worked completely unlike the marks inside the lens of the scope. Instead, it was a prism system that was just reflecting a view of the azimuth ring(s) where the scope meets the ceiling. It would therefore always be illuminated, at least as long as the interior of the sub wasn't pitch black.
See my discussion topic for more detail.
Dark Raven, thank you very much for this quick update. I will try this very quickly, even today if I find some time. I'll let you know if I find anything wrong.
Royal Raven, I haven't tried with the
Hardscope mod.
Have a nice Sunday.
Have you tried HARDscope? Is that one any good?
Unfortunately, since the last hotfix for the B129 (B129 Hotfix 2) this super mod is no longer compatible. Probably because the hotfix changes this:
Graphics:
- Periscope bearing now looks better on screen
resolutions above 1080p.
The characters on the screen have become too small now, in fact unreadable.
Other than that, the mod still seems to work. To be checked though.
Is it possible to update it?
Without your mod, the "Gerade schusse" cannot be used anymore.

The same goes for your other mod, More Accurate Periscope Sights, which go very well together.
Thanks in advance, and thanks again for your mods!

@hakan I'll look into when I'm able.
