The magazine was meant to be reloaded by a designated loader on the side,and it's mounted there to allow for twin mounts,with each MG having a magazine on opposite sides.
It was supposed to be like that so that each gun could be fired individually to avoid overheating the other,sustaining a more efficient fire rate in terms of decay for the barrels.
