So, the actual problem isn't their unit compositions, because over time the AI will use end game infantry and cannons. Their real problem is economic stability and growth, they never give a shit about what actually pays them and therefore their armies are always shit.

It didn't change the difficulty itself very much though, since the AI still doesn't usually attack with multiple army stacks. I saw the AI trying to invade lands with small armys inside 1 or 2 ships, I wouldn't call that smar. I also missed the AI prioritising upgrading farms if they have fertile/very fertile soil. I saw alot of late game provinces with no upgrades on these type of farms, like not even the first one, although the cost/benefit of these is absolutely insane.

6/10, could be better but still an improvement over vanilla

It seems like the pro-shogun clans are still building dojo, though with some line infantries. Are there any means to let those clans prioritizes modern military chain?

@Lucibal That is a great idea! I believe it is possible, since there are a few things I might be able to do to make the AI coordinate their armies better, I'll look into it :)

probably it is much more complicated to be done than campaign behavior but if you are able you could make AI more agressive in battle. Just before i fight one vs 4 armies where numers was around 6000 to 20000 of enemies. Regular armies well balanced with all kinds of unit...the issue they do not use their advantage and attack one after another except all at same time. If its possible in My opinion AI with over triple number of soldiers should just crush me in mass ofensive except waiting till i will destroy it one after another. If you know hot to do it, it will take battles to whole new level of difficulty

i think the problem is that those fleets are builded only from ironclads, which have really big chance to blow up my ships in first shot, while there are more of strong ships like warrior or frigates which dont made battle so much painfull after few seconds. idk. how other players but in my opinion there should be some ballance at the beggining because AI stops to build any other ships as fast as they research ironclads, what is understandable maybe 30-40 turns after it being researched.

maybe the ironclads should be at the same level of AI wishlist with frigates and other heavy ships, just to have some diversity, or at least there should be a little slower change of AI fleets from regular to ironclads.

@Lucibal That is (sort of) what the AI is supposed to do, since by that time most of European powers have also switched to almost exclusively building ironclads, but if you feel like it hinders the AI or reduces the enjoyability of the game please let me know and I'll change it

AI in endgame star to spamming ironclad fleets (i play with 41 units mod so i operate with also 20+ ships fleets and AI starting to build those fleets builder only by ironclads

i think you should work on hardest but most important part of AI .... how they move their armies and use them together. I have many situation where i was sorounded by 3 or 4 armies but AI werent attack me when they have clear victory, instead they move in random position to and because of it i have an oportunity to eliminate them one after another.

Could you make an alternative version where instead of trying to recruit artillery, they try to recruit line infantry and higher quality men. I am still fighting like 90% levy units. Thanks! love the mod so far.

In terms of the infantry units & artillery, they've been worked on extensively so I'm very glad that the AI fields actual armies now. Vanguard units & cavalry is a bit tricker to work out but hopefully I'll be able to make the AI use them as well. AI building currently is more focused on economy than military (Since I've significantly nerfed AI cheats the AI needs actual forms of income.) But once I feel there's been a good balance I'll focus on the military side more! Lastly, I'm extremely happy that the AI is helping out its allies, whether it be the player or other AI in their wars. I made this to make allying or vassalizing clans viable and fun so I'm very glad that it's coming into effect :D. Thank you so much for the feedback and I hope that once another update comes the mod will be even better!

As for building, it is quite a pain since there's so many branches the AI can go down so I'm still working on the finer balances. I'll make sure to add a higher priority to build defensive works in castles! Ports haven't really been worked on but I'll see if I can work on it. BTW gattling guns haven't been used by the AI because I haven't added a priority for the gattling gun tech (But it is coming! Though I'm focusing on making the AI focus on an optimal research path first).

Hello @oculus_socket, I'm glad you and your cousin enjoyed the mod! Thank you for the feedback! The AI definitely has a lot of trouble in terms of naval warfare, and I'm working on making improvements! AI naval invasions are also troublesome since I made changes so AI no longer suicide attacks your castles with no chance of winning, which is the reason why they often wait for reinforcements. I'll work on making them a bit more aggressive and smarter when it comes to sieges. In terms of AI troop tiers, it's quite complicated to sort out but I'm making good progress, so hopefully you won't see levies in late game soon! :D

* Non vanguard fielded good infantry. Even as high as armstrong guns and Guard infantry. Shogunate infantry was used a lot in latter game and was nice improvement in battles.
* AI buildings in cities generally was better than vanilla cities, even considering above mentioned flaw.
* AI came to defense or attack of other AI or human players. I dont' recall seeing that in vanilla.

* Too reluctant to attack cities/castles unless they have an overwhelming force which causes them to take attrition through bombarment and winter until uable to fight. Some AI armies would stand still for upwards of 20 turns doing nothing but dying.
* Usually it seems like they're just waiting for reinforcements tto come to their aid to attack the castle, but a lot of times, that aide isn't apparent or really freaking far from the castle.
* When we played, Satsuma (imperial vangard this round) in end game was only using low tier troops, but also had ~14 territories.
* Territories were lacking in buildings many times when we conqured them such as open building slots (1 or even 2 at times). Seemed to never build beyond castles, and no extra defense towers such as matchlock.
* Never build ports up to drydock, only as high as military port. As a result, no ironclads were ever seen. Only some copper at times.
* No gattlin guns ever seen by AI ever.

Hello IncognitoDino! My cousin and I just got finished with a play through. Definteily enjoying it compared to vanilla. We noticed a lot of things during our campaign as Nagaoka and Jozai. Just know that this was much more enjoyable compared to our previous play throughs. This entire gameplay was during this last patch released on the 26th of Sept.

Negatives

* AI will fight with only one ship against an enemy, even against a vastly superior force.
* When AI drops units off on ship, the units will run down the map through enemy territtories without attacking anything. Maybe somehow related to wanting to reinforce AI or human attack??? Just speculating.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm glad that the AI prioritizes survival over unwinable wars. This is part of the adjustments, the AI priorities defense of their province and especially survival of their clan. So they're more likely to take being a vassal than being completely wiped out (relations help with their decision). I'm especially glad to see the AI use high tier units, and the lack of cannons is due to the fact that currently they'd still spam wooden cannons if I let artillery be prioritized too highly. But I'm working on this as well! Thank you for the feedback and once the next update comes I hope you'll give it another shot :D

Well so far it has been quite the ride indeed,My vassal(the clan with many red dots scatered around a circle) gave me an event that announced they would betray me eventually,and they did,i don't know if you did that but it's a good change of pace,the AI seems a bit wary to attack though(probably because i have another mod that allows me to field infinite elite units,not cheap but it's very fun).
So far nothing special but the AI knows when it's screwed to begin with,i wanted to attack tanegashima and they let me vassalize them,i still took the province but it was certainly not expected.
I almost forgot,the AI DOES use some decent units instead of the usual line infantry or levi,i even saw imperial infantry but i haven't seen many cannons.
Traditional legendary will have to wait for now...:ALsleepemoji:

@LaBamba my experiences with Tosa no-one ever trades even with their diplomacy buff modded or not. I'm still playing and thinking AI seems good to me tbh with diplomacy. Less cheating allegiance switching. Alliances are stronger - opposition more hostile. Think this aspect of game much improved. Would be great if AI knew how to build properly but this is long standing problem.

Also, I did nerf the military access selling, since it's pretty cheap and can give the player a huge leg up. BTW, I suggest making tons of alliances and vassalizing rather than occupying the territory! They are much more stable now and the AI is a lot more willing and active to help out during wars!

AI bombing can be a bit annoying but it's there to kind of force the player to develop at least a decent navy to compete. (Since in FOTS normally navy is more of a side note.) AI forming alliances is also a designated feature, though I'm not sure how well balanced it is. Since historically speaking alliances were extremely important and therefore the AI prioritizes it very highly. Thank you! :D To address some of the AI cheats, I'm still tweaking the finer balances of things, since the ultimate goal is to have a capable AI with minimal cheats or in the best case scenario no cheats at all. Some of the trade issues I've actually never had before, and trade deals have been easier to sign in my campaigns, but I'll still look into it! AI declaring war is definitely something I'll look into, since it's still a major issue.

Some High lights: Ai is actually smart enough to bomb my settlement which is just occupied every single turn so that I do not get the castle repression bouns, but it is extremly annoying as it's really hard to maintain a full low tier army even with three settlement and Ai' s cheat just allowed it to recurit every single turn

I tried it on legendary on tosa, the experience has been quite awful. So my problem is that AI build up a lot of they buildings but they still very aggressive and very rich like the base game, By that I mean, they recurit the unit they have, at the same time building up they castles. Not only that the military acess does not worth much now, back then I can get 3 to 4 thousands of coin just by selleing them to one clan, it does not worth that much anymore. Ai still unwilling to establish trade even they are friendly with you, what? Please tone down the money cheats that Ai has(one settlement one med tier army? wtf) Also please tone it so that at least friendly ai would trade with human. By the way can you tone it so that clan that is at war with more than two faction will not actively declare war? Because ai do that, and they are willing to sacrifies their land just to kill my army.
