due to the way the melee trident works you sadly cannot block with it. So if you want to be able to block you'll have to use a shield

Is it possible to make a mele staff for attacking and blocking, as well as being able to use if for destruction magic, lets say?

Due to popular request a melee version has been added, you will be able to find it if you go back and search the dead body again. It has the same stats as a dwarven war axe.

Sorry, I should have been clearer in the description, it's a magic staff so it fires the enchantment. If there were animations for spear like weapons I would have done a melee weapon.
