I've don't have any other way of reaching out to you, so I'll just add the following here and hope that neither you nor this mod is dead.

I've been thinking about this 40w thing a lot recently and while I like elegant approach of your idea and mod, the fact is that hoi4 is designed so poorly that wider is always better. Even with this mod that stands, though the alternative widths are less bad than in vanilla. So I was wondering what would happen if it were impossible to field super-wide divisions - what if the division designer itself were limited to a more historical number of battalions, say 4x3, 3x5 or 4x4. A plus side would be that it would force more specialized templates in the 20-30w range which would be the more historical range. It might also, with your changes to cw, come closer to killing the frustrating "bigger is better" notion in hoi4.

What do you feel about this half-baked idea?

Hello, So this mod looks interesting because I wanted realism I noticed you linked a wiki for historical divisions which is extremely helpful and thank you for that. I just wanted to ask if the AI also uses it? Because I don't want to use historical divisions while the AI uses 7 2s and destroying my army ya feel me?

I copied the mod folder and .mod file from the steam workshop folder into the 'mod' folder in Documents/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron IV like @barry suggested. I then renamed the mod folder and .mod file from the long numbers to the same name they had when I made it. It was just "/width". If you don't remember what that was I found it in the 'descriptor.mod' file inside the folder under 'path'. Hopefully that makes sense!

Micromanagement nightmare only if you want optimum templates for each terrain type. Instead, go with one (1) general template for the majority of the terrain types (early assumptions appear 30W works) and a different one optimized for mountains for your Mountaineers.

Still more Development Dairies to come, so nothing set in stone yet.

Thanks, I appreciate that mate. I understand what you mean, if they keep the current overwidth penalty while making variable terrain width it'll be a nightmare of micromanagement. If on the other hand they reduce the penalty to 1% like i've done here and add the terrain stuff on top of it, I think it'll be a great system and i'll happily retire the mod. Anything that breaks the boring 20w/40w meta is good in my book.

I think your mod is arguably a better alernative to what devs are putting in, the reason is that your redesinged width does allow multiple ways to make certain divisions while not demanding a micro management. The update however is going to be great micromanagement issue. If this trend continues we may see multi-coop-player games where everyone micromanages certain part of the game. Kinda bad for SP.

Yeh, I just read the dev diary, pretty mad! My comment from literally a few hours before the teaser released was "unless Paradox ever actually changes the couple of lines of code affecting combat width" and then, bam, they announce they're changing it. I very much doubt my mod had anything to do with it, but who knows!? One can dream.

@Perihelion ... You can download your files from Steam. You need to find the folder on your machine that contains the mods you are subscribed to. On my machine, that path is ...
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\394360"

The folder with the mods has them with a numeric folder ID for each mod. If you unsubscribe to your mod, then resubscribe, you can find your mod sorting them by date. Copy those files onto your machine.

Hey Peri, did you see the dev teaser recently? Looks like when Barbarossa hits they're changing up combat width. No more meta divisions, basically. They probably took some inspiration from your mod.

Hey guys. I recently replaced my computer and am not sure how to update it from a different PC without access to the original mod. Please let me know if you've got any idea how to do that.

In the meantime though, i'm pretty sure unless Paradox ever actually changes the couple of lines of code affecting combat width this mod changes, the fact that the mod is 'out of date' doesn't matter. I might be wrong though.

@Perihelion I was wondering, would it be possible to have a different combat width depending on which provinces are involved in the fighting? In the vanilla game we have 80 width if we are fighting in the asian steppe and if we are invading Gibraltar from Spain. This makes little sense to me, if CW was a function of the length of the border between any two provinces it would be a different value each time eliminating the need to set a specific width in our divisions.
In addition, modifiers such as terrain and doctrines may change the value even more, like in EUIV.

@Nick I use it with Expert AI and there's no problem, but the AI will still make 40w divisions and stuff like that so the two mods don't interfere with each other

It's not a typo but perhaps could be worded better. Basically this mod changes the penalty of width from 2% per point of width-over to 1%, meaning you'll only be penalised in direct proportion to how much you go over. If you're 5% over, you lose 5% stats, rather than losing double and making non optimal divisions unduly punishing.

The mod does affect the AI in terms of fitting of divisions, but I have not implemented any changing of the ai behaviour re: division design as it's been pointed out this would introduce too many compatibility issues with different mods that people use. I think it's best to keep this mod relatively simply and unobtrusive, the way it is now is largely compatible with every other mod out there. I may create a companion mod in the future to address this.

As an idea, combat width makes a lot of sense, but it's very poorly implemented and leads to 20w and 40w being the only usable widths

Combat width makes no damn sense and is just annoying. Naturally the AI exploits it and always knows which templates to use.

Combat width is like the space of the battlefield. You'll realise that, you can't just throw in millions of men into a small length of terrain, and expect them to fight optimally.

The larger a division's combat width, the more space it occupies. If you attack from multiple provinces, you'll get more width (read: space) to throw more men into the battle.
