Yo, there is a bug.. if you enter the gamepad or video menu "settings" when he comes back he stays there.
To be fair, prior to The Last Stand update, you can still get "Steam Controller commands", or more accurately, "In-Game Actions" working on non-Steam Controllers regardless if the Recommended Config is designed for a specific Controller or not.
It's just that with The Last Stand update added support to non-Steam Controllers while adding New "Game Actions" and fixing bugs along the way.
I didn't know that the steam controller command worked with other controllers either, sorry about the comment

are you sure that this mod caused the game to crash?, not some other mod?
to be fair, pressing/clicking the "Steam Input" (renamed, by the way) button just redirect you to "Controller Configurator". But most folks who use Steam Input would just press the Guide Menu and go there.
However, I wouldn't call "Steam Input" option "useless" since the Official Controller Config has been revamped as part of Last Stand Update, one of them is adding support for DualShock 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One Controllers
(can't wait for more X360 Content!)
a lot of 360 stuff is like that in their PC ports
;)
