It's the "I identify as a gender that I physically am not" idea. The character is female but the creator implies that said female identifies as a male. So you have a woman who is calling herself a man because he identifies as a man even though physically he is a she.

Just be glad that there won't be any confusion on which bathroom to use like there is in reality.
