Problem has been solved by the Steam VR team : all previous 360° images that had 'lost' the VR background setting have been restored ( it was just some bug in the system )

So yeah, I'll be re-uploading systematically all items that are currently not showing the type : background
Natural_Warp  [author] 1 Feb, 2021 @ 11:08am
Well to be honest I contacted support they don't know about any solution or what went wrong, I just uploaded it the same way I always do and this time it DID get the type : background ... weird stuff and support says 'we don't know.'

Hey! I see you uploaded another version! I tested it and it works! I suppose you found what the problem was with the upload process. The new version works just fine and it's very beautiful! Good work!

I've never uploaded anything myself, so, I wouldn't know the procedure.

But the way you describe it sounds like the Workshop developers changed/simplified the procedure at some point in the past and now the "Background" description is assigned automatically, eliminating the need for the second line (the "Type" line). Or something like that.

So, the fact that the backgrounds which don't have the "Type" line, no longer work, is essentially a bug, as you said. We should probably report this bug to the devs.

Other than that, I have no idea. But thank you very much for your reply and efforts my friend! Your backgrounds are phenomenal! :-)

Only thing I do is right click that little bastard, hover over 'Workshop' and select 'upload new background'. This always results in a Steam VR Home background. Since it's the Steam VR software.

Then in that other little frame called 'Steam Workshop Uploader' There isn't even an other option, the type is preset to 'Background' and nothing else to select there. It's just that one option in a dropdown field when selected Type : 'Background'

So no idea how to alter or prevent this, it looks like it's a bug perhaps ?

I have no idea how to add the "Type" line, I always upload directly from within that little SteamVR desktop popup frame.

I've tested some of your backgrounds and I've noticed that the ones that are NOT properly categorized DO NOT WORK within SteamVR Home OR in the general Settings.

For reference reasons, I've tested all this with the Valve Index headset.

So, please make sure to change the item descriptions and add the "Type: Background" line in your backgrounds that LACK that line. Make sure to categorize them properly. Please test this yourself and tell me your results or better yet, re-categorize this item here "44th Cocoon" and make sure to add the "Type" line. I'll test it and tell you whether it worked or not.

What I'm saying is, some of your backgrounds are NOT PROPERLY CATEGORIZED. For example, your "Constructing the Void" background IS properly categorized and works perfectly fine within the SteamVR Home and in the general VR Settings outside of Home. How do I know that it's properly categorized? Because in the top right corner of the item's page here in the Workshop, both description lines exist. Both description lines are there to see. It says Type: Background Theme: Abstract, Space, Tech.

Now, let's see your backgrounds that are NOT properly categorized. For example, THIS item here, "44th Cocoon", look in the top right corner and tell me what you see. There's only ONE line that says Theme: Nature, Space, Tech. Do you see a line that mentions the Item Type as in "Type: Background"? NO! And that's precisely what I mean. Your backgrounds that DO NOT have the "Type: Background" line in the top right corner, DO NOT WORK.

Yes, I already know all that. I know how Backgrounds work both within SteamVR Home and outside of it (in the Settings). So, I'll explain again and I'll try to make myself more clear this time around.

In every Background page here in the Workshop you can see a description of the item in the top right corner, right below the Star Rating. Are you following me so far? This description usually says 2 things. One of them is the Item Type, which is "Background". The other one is the Theme, which can be anything, Nature, Space, Abstract etc.

Hi @beyonder1979 when you subscribe to a VR Background, they way you make them work is in SteamVR Home when you select an environment from the menu you can choose to change the background in that 3D environment and thus select this piece ( or any of my VR backgrounds ) as a new skybox. These special 360° VR backgrounds are experienced best in an empty environment or in an environment with minimal flooring so you can see as much as possible of the 360° artwork around you in VR.
Beyonder1979 13 Jan, 2021 @ 9:13pm
Doesn't work. I've tested many of your backgrounds and I noticed that only the ones that are PROPERLY categorized and characterized as "Backgrounds" work. All the others, such as this one, do not work. They don't appear within SteamVR Settings at all.
Natural_Warp  [author] 13 Nov, 2020 @ 1:02am
After subscribing to it you can set it as a VR background in SteamVR Home
