I mean it's rather a quite simple mod, it's highly compatible because it literally replaces only a single file (or two? I can't remember):
The tree map (trees.bmp)
And *maybe* the rivers map and terrain brushes(?)
These things are literally never changed during updates, or if they are they're overwritten by this mod. The fundamental shape of the world map never changes so as a result the mod always works.
Late game lag is caused by memory and CPU bottlenecks: too many in-game variables being stored and checked; not GPU bottlenecks. If rendering trees aren't causing you lag at the start of the game they're not gonna cause anymore at the end.
