although they do use a weird weapon base
Don't mean to sound like an ass but when I first played this map ages ago and ever since I felt like it was sortof.. off... in terms of atmosphere and I think I finally found out what's up.
The lighting feels a bit off, Specifically outside. I don't know if its just a dark sand texture of if its just that the light_environment is a bit too dark. Maybe try brightening it up a bit? I'd suggest setting the ambient color to be a little brighter too, and with a bit of blue.
Other thing might also help with the brightness of the map might be the ground texture. From what I see in the screenshots you're using displacements with texture blending? I think CE uses one big texture for the entire ground and applies a detail + bump texture over it to give it the illusion of being a high resolution texture.
Other than that, this is a really awesome map guys!
