@Lesopoval - thanks for your reply. I played with the terrain tool last night - dropped the size down to about 5 and the intensity to 30-40 - using short clicks got a nice peaking effect going - thanks very much for the tip!!

@Pebblewulff Terrain tool - raise with ctrl and without. Change brush size and brush intensity. Nothing complicated

@Lesopoval - How do you create the jagged ground in the editor? - everything I try seems to be unrealistically smooth.

Looks like you used the built in map editor. SteelRaven7 implemented it for a reason.
