If you aren't you can download KMM here . It's a much better mod manager than the default CA one.
I used paintnet to reduce the file size for Wild Boars mod, which had a size of over 500 MB, after I used BC3 (Linear DXT5) compression, the size has reduced to less than 100 MB without noticeable quality loss.

Assuming you can't put it on a timer, making a UI button for the player to switch would probably be possible. Unfortunately I don't have the skill to do so, so just offering up the suggestion to be seen.
