Would it be possible to make a version of this where the time before the referee checks for submission, and the time in the escape animation before they actually get out is extended a bit, to have Backlund just generally trapping people in it longer?

Agreed. They got that move over as a dangerous finish, and then they wasted all that build.

I agree with you two, Backlund could have gotten more run with that title, even a month or two would have been longer than three days, but I think they did a good job of building that chicken wing move and then not really doing enough with it.

Legit. Bob could have had an awesome heel run with faces chasing him for it, but they decided to go down another path.

One of wrestling's greatest crimes is that Bob never got a proper run with the title in 94. There were so few main event wrestlers around at that time and they'd really built him and the Chicken Wing to be a major threat. It would have helped Diesel if he could have built up a feud with a real heel leading into the Rumble too. Instead he was thrust into the top slot without warning, winning the title off-screen, and put into a face vs face title match against the most popular guy in the company.
