I did a lot of performance testing when Sullen Skies was first released nearly 4 years ago and the fps impact compared to vanilla was negligible.
Hope you enjoy the mod. :)
Question though: does this impact performance VS vanilla sky boxes? I have a low end PC and usually set clouds to standard or high. Thanks in advance !!

First time I've ever heard of Sullen Skies crashing the game, can't say I've had the same problem either so I'm not sure what to recommend doing other than unsubscribing.
Most map-makers now include ambient birds into their maps, so most of the time now there's no need. However if there's a map that doesn't have them I will usually patch some in if asked. :-)
