For context, in Europe, these traditions and laws were in place since at least the Roman times, where it was illegal to attack, arrest, kill, or do anything of the sort to anyone who was seeking 'Sanctuary' or 'Asylum' in a sacred location, such as a temple. This was quickly adopted by early Christianity as well and became a core concept of the religion until about the Protestant Reformation when Sainthood and Sanctuary were de-prioritized.
