Real-Time Auto Save

Ok, but in my case it also tries to do it in the main menu. And I don't think it's saving while I'm in the ideology or any other menu ingame either. I mean something feels off now, I don't remember it was the case in 1.5. Of course it can be my fault as well, I'm playing will a lot of mods, maybe they are breaking something. I will do some more tests.

@lloki So it's only during gameplay? In that case, that's intentional. As long as it's only doing it as often as you configured it to. Spending a lot of time in a menu with the game paused is basically the reason I made this mod. You'll still get auto saves even with the game paused so you don't lose whatever you were doing in the menu.

I guess it's harmless?
lloki 13 Jul @ 10:20am
Ok, so it looks like it's checking every 5 seconds whether it's time to autosave? Not sure, but I think it's when the time to autosave passed and the user is in some menu, eg. ideoligion edit. I don't remember this behaviour from the past, but maybe I missed it. Is it intended?

[Real-Time Auto Save] TryAutosave called.

[Real-Time Auto Save] TryAutosave skipped.

[Real-Time Auto Save] Set timer for 5000

[Real-Time Auto Save] TryAutosave succeeded.

Thanks for so quick answer. I can't replicate it now only with this mod enabled. I will do some more tests and let you know.

@lloki Like it pops up and says "Saving..." when you're not even playing the game, like on the title screen or something? Does it do this only with certain other mods enabled?
lloki 12 Jul @ 12:42pm
Somehow it's constantly trying to save in the main menu?

This mod is great if you want to play absolutely hardcore, no quiting or save-scuming a situation just so you can revert back 10 mins of work.

I can't thank you enough for this mod. I have so many mods that my game screen will freeze (game still runs) and I have to Task Manager my way out. I've lost so many random encounters as a result of having to default to the previous autosave AND Rim's autosave intervals are kinda bunk. You deserve a lifetime supply of Nerds gummy clusters

S-tier mod.

holy shit this is helpful

@babyblue Do you have the game configured to run in the background? If not, that probably wouldn't work.
babyblue 20 Jul, 2024 @ 3:37pm
not sure if it's different on my pc, but when i alt-tab out of the game, no more saves are being made. easy fix. as far as i'm concerned, this is an s-tier must-have-mod! thank you so much 1trick!

This has always been a fantastic and must-have mod; but I've slowly realized the downside of it over the years of playing with it:

Ideally, you'd want both real-time and in-game auto-save cadences running; ... and for them to not overwrite eachother. The thing is, with this mod running, if you pause the game and walk away from your computer for a couple of hours (say something came up unexpectedly irl) ... then you come back, and every single of your 20 auto-save slots has been overwritten with an identical save? That's unpleasant. Now you've lost any chance of going a bit back in real-game-time to undo a bug you didn't realize you'd triggered.

...

... Another alternative improvement (or, possibly, in addition - no reason they couldn't coexist?): use mouse-movement or keyboard-entry to gate the real-time clock. If the user isn't interacting with the game, after a bit, it stops counting towards the autosave timer; if your computer sits entierly idle, paused, with zero user-interaction, for twenty minutes ... that should be one autosave, not four identical ones.

@hottt3 that is LITERALLY the purpose of the mod. Its SUPPOSE to save even when the game is paused, as explicitly stated in the mod description.

Steam comments give me brain aids.
hottt3 28 Feb, 2023 @ 8:21am
This mod keeps saving the game (and count the time) even if the game is on pause - not good.
ronvon 3 Nov, 2022 @ 2:00pm
thank the lord, running rimworld with 73 mods makes this mod LITERALLY REQUIRED to actually be able to play. thank you so much for this mod.
basics :) 26 Oct, 2022 @ 12:56pm

Can you please 1.4 update?

Any chance this works with RimSaves mod? Thanks :)

@1trickPonyta any chance we can get something to stop it from counting down time while the game is loading? I've had some issues with the mod crashing when I load a large save, because as soon as the save finishes loading it immediately tries to auto-save and crashes, softlocking me out of the save until I disable timed autosaves. Might be because it's trying to do it while Rocketman is warming up, I don't have any good way of knowing the exact cause since out-of-memory crashes are kinda hard to pin down in logs. Something to stop it from counting down time to auto-save while the pause menu is open, or while the game is paused and in the background, would also be nice, though less important, since coming back to the game and un-pausing it only to have it immediately auto-save winds up being kinda silly. Less of a serious problem, though, the only issue that has is that if you leave the game paused a lot you'll wind up overwriting your autosaves really quickly.

My game loves to crash so this mod might be helpful with that (probably gonna config it to 1 min)
Ferret With A Cat Hat 8 Aug, 2021 @ 5:12am
@Thels a possible solution could be to notice if the mouse is moving or a key is being pressed

@Blazerik: That kind of would defeat the purpose of this mod, though. Some people like myself easily have the game on pause for 30 minutes or longer at the start of the game, configuring work tabs, apparel and food restrictions, colony manager tasks, first set of researches, planning, restriction zones, stockpile zones, growing zones, deconstruction commands, furniture relocation commands, placing sleeping spots and crafting spots, setting crafting spot bills, placing build wall and door commands, and so forth...
Blazerik 27 Jul, 2021 @ 2:32pm
I have an easy solution to an easy problem (that I didn't confirm exists to begin with). to prevent unnecessary saving you could make it only count the time to save once if the game is never unpaused. That way if say 10 minutes pass with the game paused it saves, but if someone accidentally leaves the game on for a day paused its not saving for no reason.
SpaceDorf 24 Jul, 2021 @ 8:14am
Thank you, this is one was on my wishlist since Autosave got introduced

My stupid self, closing the game after 5 minutes because I'm bored:
The game, not saving the ideology I spent 50% of my time on, along with my save: :)
