The reactors do work as intended, as you don't need multiple on the same ship- Their purpose is for power hungry ships, as they are more balanced in that respect.

They are based off M class stars or how fusion plants are to work in 2040- again, they are designed and balanced for larger or power hungry builds, not for small fighters or platforms
