In order for you to craft a metal drum, you need a metal drum. Its broken...
do i need the whole ass metal lvl 5 and everything just to open the lid?
For reference: In B42 the vanilla Metal Drums appear to be bugged(?) They work only as a fire source (although still no cooking available) and although they have "liquid options" this appears to be WIP currently.
Meanwhile, the vanilla barrels have no crafting options other than to disemble them into metal drops, so it should be viable to add a new recipe to make a metal version of the vanilla Rain Collector provided it is made as a new item, rather than converting into a Metal Drum.
anyone know why?
Honestly, using the barrels as inventories isn't really suggested. On the one hand, when you move an empty drum you've crafted, the inventory reverts to a vanilla spawned drum, thus removing it's inventory feature. It's a big item wipe danger.
I've just created a compatibility mod for THIS MOD , and 'Skizot's Carryable Everything' .
It also comes with an optional sub mod that will reduce the level requirement for cutting the top off an existing metal drum to create a Rain Collector (Level 4 Metalworking)!

ENJOY~!
Would it be possible to improve compatibility for other mods? It shouldn't be necessary to overwrite the doBuildMenu function in ISBlacksmithMenu or to overwrite any other functions, as you can add to the metalworking menu directly (happy to help if needed). Alternatively, if you rather not make changes or don't have time, would it be acceptable if I released a patch for this mod that overwrites ISBlacksmithMenuPatch.lua for compatibility?
You are welcome.
You should be aware that every mod that overwrites the building menu (to be more exact: adds features/new objects to the building menu - the menu that opens, when you right click on the ground) could conflict with this mod here.
One possible solution could be to load this mod here last (last thing in mod order). Worked for me this time to have both mods I want.
Happy surviving! :)
Damn dude, you rule
This mod works!
You need a metal barrel to craft a drum, even the translation (in my case: German) is wrong and tells you that you need a drum. Anyway if you have the "barrel" in your pocket, you can craft the drum!
But this mod conflicts with this mod "Wired Lamps on Pillar":
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2890387396&searchtext=grid+lamp
Or to be more exact, "Wired lamps on Pillar" overwrites the vanilla menu which causes error codes in "WLP_ISWorldObjectContextMenu.lua".
So for everyone reading the comments and wondering like me:
This mod still works!
Also I can craft metal drum, but I need smithing at lvl 6, but in my skills there is no skill 'smithing' xD May be conflict or smh.
Tried to change recipe for barrels so I can craft them without bleach/paint which I cannot find anywhere but I failed :<

Load up a few zeds, and toss them in to find out...
Actually that just gave me an idea: Rotten food can be decomposed in composters, resulting in fertilizer and worms. If the same mechanic can be used in a mod, the barrels could potentially be used as refuse burners..
Throw in unwanted items (as per rotten food in composters) set the thing alight as a trigger, and wait out the result - something like charcoal, and unusable metal.
@Biggles - Place logs in, set alight and wait
Wrote this for lazy users which will be interested in this info. Also it would be better if uve added this in discription. Only 1 sentence.
Btw thx for a mod, man <3
Any mod that edits the metalworking menu in the same way that I do with this mod won't break other people's shit.
