If you dont own hl2 ep2 and dont have it mounted, there might be addons to include the content needed too, probably.
Anyway yes, you can play without ep2, but you will experience visual issues, but gameplay will remain the same.
I don't have any specific suggestions, but a few minor ones that you could use in future maps:
-More normal and fast zombie spam
-Less poison zombie spam
-Better support for NPC's to follow you through the map and assist you (Companions)
-More custom work like the explosive zombies.

This is what I call a classic horror map that doesn't use cheap jpeg screamers. Stuff like this is generally original and good on its own. No fancy touches needed.
