Yikes  [author] 22 Jul, 2022 @ 8:51am
I made the corpse carrier in 2016 but they added it in 2021 lol
the reason it's recent on my workshop is it had to be reuploaded for revenue correction!

The corpse carrier is already over half a decade old??? Man im old. Anyways super funny cosmetic, i dont see it fitting the game much so idk how to feel about it but I love the alex yiik reference :D

thats ok not every item is for every player :steamhappy:
heyjohn14 10 Jul, 2022 @ 9:55pm
nevertheless, this is not an item that I am getting if it gets added into the game, mostly for egoistical purposes, even though i wish my english werent so limited so i could explain my points a lot better
heyjohn14 10 Jul, 2022 @ 9:53pm
the source of my "argument" was that we as a community have began to generalize the artstyle, originally i was going to point out the fact that hipsters didnt appear until the early 2000s

i appreciate the time you took to explain your views and passion for your work, i totally understand and probably agree with everything youve said throughout the replies 2 through 6. First of all i would like to apologize for my rushed and rude comments. Although i still hold my beliefs on the fact that since valve stopped examining which item they will add in the game and go solely for visually appealing. I will apologize once again since after posting my comments i went for a look in your profile, and while reading your replies i realized that you care for what you do. As for your reply about the item being paintable, my opinion remains the same, i view it as a cheap way to attract more people.
Yikes  [author] 10 Jul, 2022 @ 9:40pm
also with all due respect the corpse carrier is an item i made over half a decade ago when i was in high school, as a joke, and is rightfully halloween restricted. I've grown as an artist leagues since then.

I personally have a lot of care and respect for my work and for this game that's provided me the most opportunities and growth I've experienced in my life. This item was a series of very deliberate decisions to maintain the artistic integrity of the game's art, and some stylistic experiments in hopes of growing more knowledge of how TF2-styled hair can be created.

I would appreciate it if when commenting - on my items, but also everyone else's - if you were more polite and understanding. I have a hunch you've been told some pretty unsavory things about workshop creators from some TF2 youtube or twitter folk, and I want you to understand that it's generally not true and by and large we have a lot of care for this craft.

Cheers, man

Also in the future, I wish you would consider that the artists working on the workshop are not a monolith, and I can tell you from experience and familiarity with many of them that none of us are out to ruin this game's art style. there is no shady cabal of TF2 workshoppers dead-set on ruining the aesthetic. Many of us groaned loudly at the smissmas 2021 case's item selections, we all felt that valve had made a poor choice with how many gimmicky and tacky items they'd selected, when in the past items like that were usually a small minority of a case; trinkets for the small category of players who like those things.

We also generally don't like how item grading is handled in TF2, since valve seems oddly intent on putting some of the most visually offensive items in lower tiers. It's unlike their use of grading in CSGO where higher tiers are usually the more gaudy skins.

I also fail to see how this item neglects TF2's art-style. I made care to stylize the hair shapes and sculpt to invoke the deliberate brush strokes and planar changes you'd see in the works of artists like JC leyendecker whose art inspired the foundation of this game's style. I took extra effort to make technically nuanced alterations to the mesh solely to mitigated unwanted visual noise and detail and keep plane changes to only highlight important key shapes like the front bangs of the hair.

While we can argue my skill as an artist (I'm certainly not to the level of Leyendecker's expertise) I feel like my work on this item succeeds in respecting core features of TF2's art direction and the way things ought to be textured and stylized. TF2 is also a technically very simple game in the rendering department so our toolkit as artists to achieve this goal is limited.

As for references, reference items have existed in TF2 for well over a decade now. A great example is the Flapjack; a reference to the classic anime Akira. The item is a clear reference if you recognize the source material, but works well on its own as a unique design if you don't. that's the category I was attempting to fit this item into, and I feel I've succeeded. It's an item that's funny and endearing if you know the reference, but works perfectly without needing that reference. it's a generic enough hairstyle and beard combo that when making it I realized how many different characters and personalities it could be used to look like. I feel like the flexibility of this item raises it well beyond its original referential intent.

There is no stated rule anywhere that says Scout is not allowed to have beard cosmetics. Historically he's had a handful of facial hair cosmetics available to him, which have only become more liberally haired with time. I'm not sure where this perception you have of scout not being allowed to have facial hair comes from, but it seems to me completely manufactured and asinine. I entirely respect if you don't personally want to wear a scout cosmetic with facial hair, which is part of the reason why I included styles without it.

There is nothing against scout's personality for him to have a beard; plenty of young, pre-adult men have bushy thick beards, plenty of low-testosterone men have beards as well, and the beard here aligns low enough on his face so as to not be too thick and masculine; it's the type of beard you would expect someone of scout's stature, physique, and demeanor to grow, I feel.

1/6 Hey, John

Making this cosmetic paintable was a decision made with the full knowledge that the paint system is imperfect and full of gaudy colors, specifically so players could make use of the myriad paint colors that look appropriate for hair. I trust TF2 players to make responsible use of the cosmetic tools available to them, I have that much baseline respect for the average player, and I believe the typical loadouts you might find on a server validate that respect; players tend to be pretty responsible with their cosmetics, and most players seem to have respect for the color space and aesthetic of the game when doing so. It wasn't a decision made flippantly, and I only featured example loadouts using natural hair colors for a reason. If I could blacklist certain paint colors from this item, I would. My judgment was that the benefits of allowing paintability outweighed some bad actors who would use it to look gaudy.

i just realized that this is the person who made the corpse carrier, defeating my entire conversation by simply creating the worst item in the existence of tf2, i am sorry for the critique man, my bad to expect anything better from you, lmao
heyjohn14 10 Jul, 2022 @ 9:14pm
@extra ram
i just went through your workshop submissions, needless to say i didnt find a single cosmetic created by you with any NOTICEABLE facing hair on scout, which makes me think, what made you not make anything similar yourself (even though it looks like it would be really easy for you judging by your previous work) and instead you went on a rant about this specific scout cosmetic, maybe was it because you saw that it had a lot of traction on the workshop? thus you wanting to support it, making a reputation for yourself?
heyjohn14 10 Jul, 2022 @ 9:08pm
@extra ram
Also i would like to adress the fact that this item is a reference to yiik, or whatever tf its called, and if you have read any of the valves workshop guidelines you could have easily figured out that you cant put copyrighted items into the game, just for the fact that valve doesnt own the rights. To conclude because i really dont want to give this specific creator anymore "copium" as he mentioned in another reply, i would like to advice people to either (a) stop voting for items just because they look nice and (b) if you are a creator, have some f*cking respect for your work and what you want to contribute in this community
heyjohn14 10 Jul, 2022 @ 9:08pm
@extra ram
Just because valve stopped caring doesnt make a reason for the community to stop caring as well, keep the damn artstyle alive, even though it died a long time ago, with all the BS cosmetics added throughout the years, it doesnt mean that "since there are already 5 million bad items, my item wont hurt", no it will hurt. It is forcing bad habbits for future item creators, since they will think "oh that generic item made into the game and made quite a few bucks for his creator, i might as well place a d@ldo on top of pyros head"
heyjohn14 10 Jul, 2022 @ 9:07pm
@extra ram making cosmetics paintable is just another cheap way for the publisher to cash out. Everyone is trying to get their multi-class, paintable, head slot cosmetic into the game just for the purpose of people unboxing cases hoping for an unusual, thus the item publisher gets to as i said, cash out by simply taking advantage of valves neglection for the game. Go ahead and search for any scout cosmetic published sollely by valve, before the community took over, i doubt if at least one features anything similarly looking to a beard.
Extra Ram 10 Jul, 2022 @ 8:23pm
@heyjohn14

Scout's never had a rule set in stone that he's meant to be beardless; even if he did, it's safe to say it's a rule that's no longer being enforced by Valve by other cosmetics added to the game over the years that gives Scout facial hair.

Also why is an item being paintable now all of the sudden a bad thing? Making cosmetics paintable opens up more options for players who wanna utilise it and customise their appearance some more. Is there a genuine reason why it's now all of the sudden a bad thing, or is this just another buzzword you commenters are picking up and using anywhere you can to make you seem smart, like 'artstyle' and 'item on head'
Yikes  [author] 10 Jul, 2022 @ 6:09pm
throughout the process of making this item i realized it unintentionally looks like a lot of people and I hope that speaks to the flexibility of the item
Ginja 10 Jul, 2022 @ 6:07pm
The fact that it unintentionally looks like Ewan McGregor is hilarious and I love this cosmetic for that reason.
Yakuza Merkitzi 10 Jul, 2022 @ 7:42am
Nice! a version compatible with other Eyewaer Cosmetics.
heyjohn14 10 Jul, 2022 @ 4:05am
scout with a beard, because that totally fits scouts character and artistic design, also of course it is paintable
Skoi 9 Jul, 2022 @ 4:03pm
