i also experimented a lot with starting a faction on a different plane. i'm 99.99% sure it's not possible without the portal.

I consider an undefended portal into Agartha an absolute win.
Most interesting plane but you're dependent on rolling a diggers shovel to explore it as most factions

Interesting, I gave that a shot but it led to a lot of worldgen failures and places a weird, impassible portal on the overworld. I'm going to leave it as is for now, since I personally prefer having the portal. Thanks for the suggestion!

Make the home terrain a Cave wall not a portal it'll solve the problem.
