Without using a custom DLL there is no way around this limitation for BNW Great People.
lshipp  [author] 23 Mar, 2018 @ 6:13am
If you rename a Great Artist from "Joe Schmoe" to "Rembrandt", you do not get "Rembrandt"s great work, you still have "Joe Schmoe"s and you cannot alter it
lshipp  [author] 23 Mar, 2018 @ 6:12am
As far as I remember the lua-code is already set-up to be auto-adaptable to the other types of great people.

BUT .. you cannot control which great work gets assigned to a unit from lua or any other means
Kiwawa 22 Mar, 2018 @ 7:45pm
Is it possible to make this for other great people like artists and musicians as well? Or can you at least tell me how to do it? I am quite familiar with the Civ 5 XML files, I just need a heading.
Economic Terrorist 10 Jan, 2018 @ 9:13am
Ah finally. It felt friggin weird having a Japanese general named Sargon or Sin Tzu
Spaceman27 2 Oct, 2016 @ 10:51am
Coming back to you with a similar issue as before, this time its with my own civ. Im playing as the Romans and i just earned a new GG but instead of being from my pool of GG names, its a GG from the Ottoman name pool. I remember that you did say that the UC mods could be causing this glitch and im going to test that out to confirm it.
Ulfric 1 Aug, 2016 @ 5:19am
It's Philippe Pétain, not Henri. Nobody call him Henri in France, even if it was one of his name.
lshipp  [author] 22 Jul, 2016 @ 10:02am
not sure. I don't remember that 3UC/4UC should cause a conflict
Spaceman27 21 Jul, 2016 @ 10:40am
Im using japan with the UC mods that add unique buildings and units to the in-game civs, is that whats causing the issue ?
lshipp  [author] 20 Jul, 2016 @ 9:25pm
Unless the mod-maker of a modded civ adds specific code for this mod, then that modded-civ will draw from a generic list generated from all Firaxis-supplied civs not in the game.

If you are playing as a modded version of Japan that is not actually defined as the Firaxis-suppled Japanese civilization, then so far as this mod is concerned, Japan is not in the game, so the generals and admirals assigned for Japan can be used by any civ that needs to draw from the generic lists.
Spaceman27 20 Jul, 2016 @ 9:55am
Honda Heihachiro just showed up in a different civ than my japanese one. The civ in question where he spawned is a modded civ from the generic fantasy civ serie, could that be the cause for this mix up ?
lshipp  [author] 30 Jan, 2016 @ 8:16am
Because I don't care to be drawn into potential political polemics wrt to living persons and their current actions. Some people might think current person X is a great general or admiral -- those from the 'other side of the coin' might think such a living person is lettle better than a mass murderer or serial killer.
lshipp  [author] 30 Jan, 2016 @ 8:16am
Using only deceased persons is more likely to provide at least one level of 'removal' wrt to any emotional or political side-baggage an historical person carries. And with historical figures, historians (professional and amatuer) have had a chance to dig deeper into the reality and provide more information as to whether someone was really all that 'great' a war-leader.
lshipp  [author] 30 Jan, 2016 @ 8:16am
Full discloser: I had to violate these guidelines a bit for some of the game's civs where there really isn't much historical information, or in the case of admirals, where a particular people did not have much of a naval tradition. But I avoided living persons as much as was possible, and stretched the definition of 'great admiral' more than the definition of 'great general' to come up with reasonable names for some of the civs.
Elitegamer010 30 Jan, 2016 @ 6:26am
cool but why the no living people rule? i'm sure they wouldn't care if their name is in some random mod for some computer game they never heard about, that is even if they would find out about this
lshipp  [author] 6 Nov, 2015 @ 8:37pm
The created promotion is 100% necessary for the mod to function correctly.

I am using Machaivelli's UnitCreatedGood system, which is where the promotion comes from. The promotion acts as a marker (and has no other function) that a unit has been previously processed by the UnitCreatedGood system and stops the game's core lua system from trying to re-fire and re-execute when units are added back onto the map while a saved game is being reloaded by the player. Without this system and this marker promotion, relaod of a saved game would not be possible and/or would cause any number of bizarre and undesirable results.
The Blonde 20 Oct, 2015 @ 2:17am
Continuing from my previous comment -

I can see in the screenshots above the promotion I'm talking about, it is the one with the cross and the lightning icon. So this is indeed a bug. Hope you fix it soon!
The Blonde 20 Oct, 2015 @ 2:16am
@lshipp

Hello,

Your mod appears to give all units a promotion called "Created" which serves no purpose. Can you confirm that it does indeed happen to you too and attempt to fix it?
deathdroid29 11 Oct, 2015 @ 6:49am
Ishipp, I know this was merely a thought. a suggestion, one that can be overlooked and discarded.
NickSheperd 3 Oct, 2015 @ 10:56am
@Ishipp. No worries my friend! Thank you very much for getting back to me! I love the idea of your mod and I think it's silly that they didn't include such a thing in the first place. You being so helpful with your mod is a great thing! Thank you for being a wonderful Mod Author and I wish you the best!

Just to clarify, when you said it "should fix your issues" Are you referring to both Great Heroes and Really Advanced Set up? Just want to clarify that before I try anything.

Thank you so much again!
lshipp  [author] 25 Sep, 2015 @ 8:00am
@Nicholas
Sorry it took so long for me to even see your comments but the V8 posted today should fix your issues.

@deathdroid29
I'll think about an 'add-on' mod for some of the more-popular custom civs, but that so easy gets into an endless process of updating such an add-on every five minutes when JFD issues a new civ :)
lshipp  [author] 24 Sep, 2015 @ 11:17pm
Great Heroes mod = he has renamed the units from "Great General" to "Hero" in the In-Game Tooltips. My mod is specifically looking for "Great General" and "Great Admiral". I may be able to patch around it but may take a while.

Really Advanced Set-up = no idea as yet
lshipp  [author] 24 Sep, 2015 @ 11:03pm
*sigh* didn't realize people were leaving comments here. Some of my mods here on steam it seems like I never comment notifications for.

I'll look into the hereos mod and really advanced setup but I am pretty sure I have a fair idea of the root cause.

The issue with JFD's Lincoln is because the civ is not actually CIVILIZATION_AMERICA but rather CIVILIZATION_JFD_AMERICA_LINCOLN. So please refer to the notes about custom civs and what the authors of those mode would need to do.
deathdroid29 21 Aug, 2015 @ 11:05am
Ishipp, I'm playing with JFD's Lincoln US mod, somehow when I get a Great General it is not of civ I'm playing as. I'm using your mod, as well as Kramer Confederate States. Is there any way I can manipulate or amend your mod so I can play with American generals for the Lincoln mod.
NickSheperd 22 Jun, 2015 @ 7:33am
One final update. Turns out it was an issue with Great Heroes and your mod. I don't know exactly what the confliction is, perhaps if you test it you can figure it out. Great Heroes, if you don't know it is, is a mod that makes Generals much more valuable and fun to use in combat situations. I highly recommend giving it a try. And I very much hope you figure out a solution to whatever bug it is that's causing this issue.
NickSheperd 22 Jun, 2015 @ 7:16am
I found yet another game-breaking bug with this mod. I have no idea what caused it, but after solving the first one, I got a policy unlock that spawned a great general, and what happened was that it kept spawning unlimited generals why cycling through the names over and over. I don't know what's going on, but I'm going to have to disable your mod for now I'm afraid. Makes me sad, but your mod just doesn't work with anything else it seems. Is it incompatible with the Great heroes mod? That's the only other mod I have that affects generals directly. Aside from that, I have no idea what it could be.
NickSheperd 21 Jun, 2015 @ 2:44pm
Greetings! Just informing you and everyone else that I found a very interesting bug with this mod and the "Really Advanced Setup" mod. I was playing civ earlier today, and decided that I wanted to start a new game, so I was tweaking my mods a bit when I realized that I never activated this mod. So I did. What followed was pure agony as every time I attempted to start a new game, it would just load for infinity and never work. This happened no matter what I did except for when I turned the majority of my mods off. Once I knew it was a mod problem, I set out figuring out which one. The Advanced Setup mod allows you to have certain units spawn with you, usually I have a general among those. Turns out, having a general spawn+this mod enabled breaks the game. I have no idea why. If you remove the general from spawning then the two mods work fine together.
lshipp  [author] 26 Apr, 2015 @ 5:38am
OK.
mprairie12 25 Apr, 2015 @ 7:15pm
working now thanks
lshipp  [author] 25 Apr, 2015 @ 6:39pm
what civilization were you playing as?

Sorry about not getting to you earlier. I don't always seem to get notifications of new comments. This has been going on for some couple of months now.
mprairie12 20 Apr, 2015 @ 8:21am
you mod was working fine til i started a new game now i am getting names from oter civs it stopped working
lshipp  [author] 9 Apr, 2015 @ 7:04am
@Derpbag707,

Follow the link to the CivFanatics Discussion thread of this mod. I have a complete listing of all names currently being used at Post #8 [forums.civfanatics.com] of that thread. Heinz Guderian and Erwin Rommel are in the list for Germany. But I did not use any more of the WWII-era German Generals because, well, I'd think it would be obvious why doing so would be uncomfortable.
Jaxtonian al Gaming 6 Apr, 2015 @ 11:43am
@derpbag707
I would assume so.
Dewmeister 4 Apr, 2015 @ 12:00pm
@Tsar Herring i knew that, i meant, is he a german great gerneral in the mod
lshipp  [author] 4 Apr, 2015 @ 9:04am
I just tested and I'm not getting the TXT_KEY_SOME_NAME thing. If this is still an issue for you, drop a note and let me know which expansions and DLC packs you have, as well as which version of the mod you are currently using.
lshipp  [author] 4 Apr, 2015 @ 8:54am
@ramontorres15
You are getting that and not John Buford in-game ? What you are seeing is an indication that the whole file for the In-Game names is getting dumped by the game. But I have not encountered this.

Strange but I don't remember seeing your comment before. Otherwise I would have responded earlier.
ramoisagamer 21 Feb, 2015 @ 10:54am
How can I remove the TXT_KEY_GREAT_PERSON_BUFORD to only keep the name?
Jaxtonian al Gaming 7 Dec, 2014 @ 9:31am
@derpbag707
Yes, Rommel was perhaps the Nazi's greatest generals. He also tried to assassinate hitler. On his funeral soldiers form both sides attended.
Dewmeister 26 Nov, 2014 @ 3:37pm
is rommel another one of germanys great generals
Spaceman27 1 Sep, 2014 @ 8:08am
Its okay, take all the time you need. The mod is great as it is right now and i look forward to the update. :)
lshipp  [author] 31 Aug, 2014 @ 4:48pm
I'll add him to the next update, but it might be a while. I kind of took a vacation from researching more names so that I could spend some time actually playing the game.
Spaceman27 28 Aug, 2014 @ 11:31am
Would you add Tadakatsu Honda/Honda Heihachirō to the list of great generals for Japan ?
Stella 25 Aug, 2014 @ 2:26pm
It's got to be possible. By the sounds of it, it's a bigger than than just changing the system and more about changing the entire game that touches it. Which is a big change. And a hefty one. Granted, Steam likely wouldn't like this and auto-fix this, especially when you can't just run the game off of Steam like other games, but still. I gotcha. I hope they do an eventual patch to allow this sort of option to help make the game more immersive and especially include it into Beyond Earth rather than more random crap that doesn't fit the civilization.
lshipp  [author] 25 Aug, 2014 @ 9:05am
Unfortunately, no. The experts on the C++, dll, exe type programming tell me there's nothing mod-creators can get at. And they're all at levels of programming knowledge that just makes my head hurt when they start trying to 'explain it' to me. :(

It's not about the steam workshop one way or the other, it's about the core game files and what they allow mod-authors to get at. Trust me, I really wanted to be able to do it for great works and great works people, but it's a no go at the current time.
Stella 24 Aug, 2014 @ 7:52pm
So, the issue is the system is set up to pick and choose. Well, there has to be SOME way to modify the game, even if you have to go off of the Workshop due to it altering files Steam won't allow through Workshop, so that it selects them at least based on a list for each Civ. Which, yes, would be hefty and would NOT work with Civ mods unless they specifically programmed around it, but still.
