They will only show up if you build them or place them in creative.
If you want to have them show up randomly around the campaign you could try opening the folder and dropping the ships into the game files. Although I'm not the one to ask as I haven"t done it myself, so try asking around in the discord.

It's not a mod. Just a bunch of ships that you can trow into your games for fun. Lore wise the ships have their own "unique" descriptions and the steam page has most of the current lore.
