I tested on about 150 mods, the error appeared once and did not lead to problems.
But yes, you can use a cleaning mod.

Otherwise you might have to go through your save file and remove references to the old faction, I think.
I also don't know C code but you can suprisingly do a fair bit with custom genes and xenos using just xml from what i can tell
Just like any other xenotype you could add parts too so Bunny ears on Robot Maids.
There are so many possibilities, Wish i was a modder i would work with you on this if i had the Know how. Hope some one picks this project up.
So my logic was that a sentient race of synthetics would be created in a similar way to how mechanoids are, but more complicated and impossible to replicate on a rimworld as well as just a labor or combat based depending on why they were made. That unlike mechanoids they were at least part human or close enough due to advances in the process.
A little dumb idea but would be neat to see at least one crash mod for the game. Suprised there aren't really any as it is
As for the gene, I'll just list the options: No meat from the bodies, food is required for recharging (I think about recharging like drones, but this is unlikely), immunity to flammability, immunity to diseases and toxins, immunity to food poisoning (like synthetic the body is not susceptible to disease), regeneration of limbs or just scars, increased carrying capacity, cannot die of old age, sterile. Well, this is what I came up with at the moment.
