Haha thanks! I look forward to your updated drones mod.
Let me know when the porting is done. When this mod is more mature, I would love to make this an add-on mod for your drones mod. Having a unified drones ecosystem should be less confusing for the players, and it's less work for me as well ;)

Ok, I'll check missile drones and see if I can replicate the crash.
About the drones range - I can double-check in game, but all offensive drones should launch at 600 range, so I'm not sure what you're talking about? (The stats are misleading because I haven't had time to work on those yet. Ignore the stats for now.)
Guess i have to work faster now, haha

Which drone(s) were you using when it crashed? In what kind of situation? If you have a craft save file or a screenshot, that would help me replicate the situation and track down the cause of the crash.

As for drone targeting, it will stay the way it is. Mechanically, I don't have that much control over how a drone selects its target part. Drone will use the targeted part upon launch, but randomly re-target once the initial targeted part is destroyed. The ship doesn't have a way to update the drone's target once launched. Thematically, I like the idea that drones are more powerful and by nature have less placement restrictions, but you have less direct control over the drones themselves.
Hopefully no more issues with PD drones. If this goes well, I want to work on a missile bombing drone next.
I assume the Ion Laser you're talking about is the Ion Beam in game? I couldn't find a way to get a drone to emit a damaging beam, so I don't know if beam drones are possible.
Without getting into the technicalities, if I try to get a drone to shoot too many times, for some reason the game freezes (specifically the ship library and load ship functionality, of all things). I don't know the solution to that problem, which means I will have to design drones that execute slower, more powerful attacks.
That's why PD drones have low fire rate, and I raised the damage of each shot to compensate.

@PacketInc The mod adds a laser drone launcher. Look in the energy weapons section, it should look just like a small laser blaster.
