would actually work as a vanilla animal if restricted to good biomes

I want to start with one in adventure mode please?

How fun! cant wait to turn this on and forget about it, only to magically find a golden goose in the far future. stoked!

I'll kill the goose, so I get all of the golden eggs at once.

Genius mod. Wish I thought about it.

@Some Guy
I want this mod to be functional, polished, and not to interfere with other mods as much as possible, so it is unlikely that I'm going to add a bunch of new features to it ever, but I'm glad you like it.

1.0.3 is up now and fixes child goose graphics (apparently I had broken all of them). It also removes the FEMALE tag from golden geese (and that prevents them from giving live birth). Existing geese in existing saves cannot be fixed, but new saves in 1.0.3 are fixed, and I think newly spawned geese in a save that has been updated to 1.0.3 should be fixed (but don't have an easy way to test that)

Thanks again for the bug report.

I have played with this mod quite a bit, and I do love it to death. Love the high fantasy, and as the math seen below points out it's not even very profitable compared to cooked meal multipliers.

That said I do have a bug report, and it's a bit funny. I don't know much about modding this game, or programming in general, but I will do my best to be specific. If this is just a joke mod, it would break my heart. I am waiting patiently for more and more deep fried meme garbage to shovel onto this game, and this golden goose is high quality enough to stick it to the normal saves

The golden geese reproduce via live birth, and the offspring are invisible. I found out because I just saw the pop-up for it, and wondered if it meant the gold bar was ready. Nah. It seems like the obvious issue is to further neuter these golden geese?

My mistake! Looks like a sneeky normal goose went and bunked with the golden and then left.
Barely_Creative  [author] 23 Dec, 2022 @ 8:40pm
@Amicus
That should not happen, and looking at the raws I'm not sure how it could unless you're also running some other mod that adds eggs to all castes of geese or the golden goose just happened to sit on a nest box that already had eggs in it.
If you are pretty sure this is happening, I'd appreciate it if you could start a discussion and give me some more details.
Amicus 23 Dec, 2022 @ 6:43pm
Is it normal for them to produce normal eggs and gold bars?
Kituneki 18 Dec, 2022 @ 3:38am
its a pity that this isnt part of the main game, embarking with a gold goose from the start could lead to some hilarious starts in your first year of gobbos just absolutely steam rolling you because they heard you got a precious birdy..or maybe attract giants to raid you by 500% if their are any giants left in your world also if you are able to breed golden geese from golden geese the growth rate should be slow and take a long time for them to reach full maturity/adult maybe 3 to 4 years but by extension that may make the G.Goose a bit fiddly to deal with making them a totally separate entity maybe. but something to think about if you want to improve/balance them

Nice changes! Super rare but exceedingly awesome is the best way to design creatures for DF
Barely_Creative  [author] 13 Dec, 2022 @ 2:06pm
Yeah, that's all good advice, 1.0.1 will reduce the spawn rate to 1 in 1000 (5 normal geese should expect to birth one golden goose over the span of their 17 year average lifespan)

And the goose gold bars will be more valuable (multiplier of 3) with the golden goose pet value also being 10k dwarfbucks to make it prohibitively expensive to embark with and to make a flock an extremely precious resource.
Jack Jack Attack 13 Dec, 2022 @ 12:04pm
The big value of Gold compared to meat isn't in the absolute value when traded, it's in its ability to be used to make high end jewelry & structures to upgrade rooms. A good access to gold means Guidhall & Temple upgrades become trivial, and the multiplicative value with any available Copper or Silver is also very high when turned into crafts and inlaid with jewels. A Golden Goose should be a rare & valuable thing, once every few years maybe for a fortress that is mass producing Geese, rather than essentially guaranteed with even just a couple of nest boxes. 1-2% spawn rate might even be too much, considering that 5 Geese laying will easily pump through 100 Goslings in a year.

@Stogie I agree that these are easy to acquire, and it would be simple for me to decrease their frequency, but overall they are not actually that valuable over their lifetime. An average goose would produce 85 dwarfbucks of eggs over its lifetime, which would probably be cooked into more valuable meals, and which can reproduce more geese, all for a pet value of 6. The golden goose makes 12750 on average, but can't reproduce and makes a fairly useless metal at a very slow rate. I think raising the pet value to 900 would make that fair, and the fact that you need a flock to actually support a gold craft industry would balance the value, but I could also increase the value multiplier on "goose gold bars" and turn this into a wildly valuable animal. What do you think?

@The I don't currently intend to expand this because it was mostly written as a joke mod, but if you want to look at the code and make your own version then you can go ahead. It should be reasonably well commented, and a nearly duplicate mod that just changes GOOSE_GOLDEN to something new would even play nicely with it (you would also have to change the INORGANIC:GOLD to whatever you want the new goose to drop.

The wiki aslo has great resources on modding, including examples on how to create free material reactions here's one for adamantine:

Really love the concept of a rare and mythical gold-laying goose. It DOES seem a little easy to acquire, though...

Regardless, a possible way to balance this thing could be to make it incredibly sought-after, like a really, REALLY fancy artefact. So if you want to benefit from a golden goose, you'll need to keep it in a secluded vault and protect it from thieves.

Nice, I'm trying to do the same thing with farmable resources. Any plans to make different kinds of geese? An iron goose, an obsidian goose, etc?
Barely_Creative  [author] 13 Dec, 2022 @ 1:11am
Sorry, you got to me before I finished the description, basically it adds some geese that lay golden eggs.
Naesh 13 Dec, 2022 @ 1:07am
what does this do? :D
