@cptnoname,
It's a personal preference, nothing more or less.

No Alpha Centauri or Zeta Reticuli makes this a non-pick for me.
It isnt about personal preference. Its about being immersed in a galaxy and seeing real actual star names out there.

Anex, it's entirely your choice how you do your own mod, and other people can then decide whether to play it or not, so I'm not hear to criticise your decision about the Greek letters.

However, I don't think it's correct that these Greek prefixes generally refer to close tidally locked stars. As I understand it the Greek naming system is called the Bayer designation and was originally devised in around 1600 AD. Each Greek letter refers to a different star (or system of stars) in the constellation.

So for the constellation Centaurus, Alpha Centauri is a triple star system consisting of Alpha Centauri A, B and C, which are also known as Rigil Kentaurus, Toliman and Proxima Centauri respectively. All three are about 4 light years away.

On the other hand, Beta Centauri, also known as Hadar, is a completely different triple star system, which is about 390 light years away.

Delta Centauri, which is 410 light years away, may or may not be a binary system.

getting a CTD during the start of a new game with this mod xl and a few others enabled, when i disable this mod it is able to start the new game fine. Was using random start position. When i started a new game last week with same mod list and used a outer reached start position it started the game fine.

how are the arabic, latin, greek, and scientific names incomprehensible? they're just like, words.
Dizzy Ioeuy 3 Aug, 2023 @ 11:03am
LOL Centauri is pretty, well... Greek.
dendriti 5 Jul, 2023 @ 11:01pm
Thanks for replacing those weird Arab and Latin names with honest English names like Centauri

We all know why Aplha, Beta designations exist, you failed to read the part below comments where i specifically explained that the game does'nt replicate that , theres no trinary, binary systems.
"Normally Alpha, beta type designations are given to tidally locked stars or stars in close proximity to one another, e.g. Alpha Centauri (α Centauri) consists of 3 stars: Rigil Kentaurus(Alpha Centauri A), Toliman (Beta Centauri) and Proxima Centauri (C).[12] Proxima Centauri
Now, the DW game generation would never put these stars in any close proximity and doesn't even generate binary or trinary stars, thus just adds to confusion and unrealistic to name the stars like so at random.
Hence simplified. Hence the title "Realistic"."

Does that make more sense now.

@Saffron, pretty sure you can create a discussion in corresponding section of this mod and write a novel there if you wish. The restriction is only for comments under a workshop item and other uploaded things like screenshots.

I was going to post a comment about why stars are given an "Alpha" and "Beta" designation. But since our society has decided that all thoughts must have extreme truncation limits (really? 1000 letters including spaces and punctuation? That's little better than a goddamn tweet) no one can explain anything or convey a deep thought. Everything has to be shallow, superficial, and often times WRONG because no place on the internet save maybe Reddit gives a person the ability to convey any but the briefest of thoughts. Thanks, Steam, for devolving into that shit. Yeah I might as well be vulgar, too. Why not?

At present, Distant Worlds does not properly read modded star lists, so this and any other mods attempting to alter star names do not have any effect. I confirmed this with a developer.

@Kahnite, haha, I sensed a disturbance in the force. So had to work faster.
Kahnite 19 Mar, 2023 @ 6:56am
DANG! Beat me to it. I was working on incorporating IAU names. Thanks.
SgtScum 13 Mar, 2023 @ 1:41am
Waresky its not that the devs couldn't spend time to come up with better names but more to the fact its basically a one man show with some helpers on various bits like the artwork and coding and such. The functionality to add in a more thematic set of names was around even in DWU and the devs more or less rely on the players to come up with stuff like this. Works for me because thats more time they get to spend on the nuts and bolts of the game.

However these are cool and thanks for taking the time to generate them! :steamhappy:

(copy paste from the empire names mod but still relevant)

Thank you - very handy mod!
Nemesis 5 Mar, 2023 @ 7:24pm
Ah I see and thanks for the mod.
Anex  [author] 5 Mar, 2023 @ 7:29am
I explained in the description why I did that, but here's another reason,
Normally Alpha, beta type designations are given to tidally locked stars or stars in close proximity to one another, e.g.
Hence the title "Realistic".
Nemesis 4 Mar, 2023 @ 6:50pm
Shame you took out the alpha and Beta's etc because they are realistic star names.
Waresky 4 Mar, 2023 @ 11:41am
Ahhhh at las SOMEONE use a DECENT realistic coolest REAL names. i hate DEV for too many "idiotism" in this game. probable NO one DEV read every SINGLE sci-fi book..Asimov,pournelle,Heinlein (HEINLEIN..not a no one)... Jesus.. Ty!
