For example, if you wanted to make a cool looking hat, but also wanted parts of the hat any color that anyone wants? The only way to do that currently would be to make new variants of that sprite, which causes a quite a few annoying issues...
The solution I thought up for this problem is to add a layers system of some kind, which I think how it could work is, to render the higher layers on top of the base layer (Basically overlay the upper layer onto the lower layer).
Now for the example hat, you'd only need to make two (or however many custom colors you want the hat to have) sprites for it, and there, problem solved, mostly everyone is happy with their hat that they can put on their slugcat, and change the colors of it without any muddy mixed or dark colors.
