@JCweirdo the R-17 was just the base version, there are plenty of them R-17M, R-17MU, R-17W.... the SM-2 missile can attack targets up to 33km, the R-17 flies at a maximum of 35km and due to the cruise height and the lack of oxygen on this altitude, the R-17 is wobbling a lot, making it hard to counteract with missiles.
