l4d2 hud covers the elbows anyway, so it's not that bad. thanks for the answer!

Unfortunately there's not much I can really do about the weird crumpled up elbows, it's a problem with the arm models themselves. It's present on most weapons but L4D2 animations always keep the elbows out of view. I could move the elbows out of frame like the vanilla game does, but I feel that removes some of the charm from the look poses.

elbows break when looking down. this is noticeable on l4d2 characters.

Using Blender's 'copy rotation' bone constraints on the Driven_ulna and Forearm_driven to copy over the X and a bit of the Z local rotation from the hand. Set the influence on the ulna to 0.7 X and 0.3 Z and set the forearm to 0.4 X, no Z. It's as good as I could get it to look with the bizarre weighting on the arms.
