use one of the (many) other starbase mods where they buff defense platforms then.

Ion cannons are terrible lol. Defense platforms are way better. The only perk of Ion cannons is the range. You build 1 to force the enemy fleet into combat as soon as they enter the system and stack the rest with Large weapon slot defense platforms. Obliterating a fleet of artillery battleships.

build gun/missile/strike craft modules, they're buffed enough that they should cover you for the early game.
