Classes are mainly recognized by thier Designs, voicelines, animations and weapons. The class emblem on the side of the mercs are also so small you'd barely notice them from a distance, meaning they are no help at recognition from afar, but only up-close.
Spy and Scout are also the only two classes in the game that lacks class icons on their regular outfit. but people still recognize who they are because of the character design.
Also there are also Cosmetics in the game already have no emblem by default.
(Sub-Zero Suit and Water Waders are good examples for this one, as none of the two cosmetics have any class icons by default)

And yes, they are important. They've been there since day 1 for some fucking reason.
