I do have my own theory, but it's something I didn't mention because I wanted to leave any player who's interested in that the freedom to make up their own story.
If you're having a problem with the theme, right before loading the map you can select it from a small drop-down menu
Or you could subscribe to the Common Ground mod, that will show you where these holes are even outside the tiles you bought.
Also, the map is also quite heavy, so it may require a little bit more waiting when reloading it.
