The places I've seen the most successful empires usually come from are the desert in the North East of the map. Near the three stone circles and the bridge is also good and the area in the south near the river delta also works well. If you are happy to drop buffs you can start them anywhere, evil for example will stop them being cursed if you want to start someone in the cursed areas.

Hehe, much too long. I think I spent around 100hrs on it. I abandoned it at about 33% because it was taking too long, then randomly felt in the mood to finish it a couple of months later.
