Sometimes it's easier due to my own knowledge and available sources (e.g. WW1/WW2), sometimes it's hard due to lack of my interest, knowledge or available accurate sources (Korean War).
Hell, I even used certain better games as a reference in some instances, like Verdun.
Lastly I suggest hitting the perfect mix of realism, authenticity and fun gameplay, too much of either sours the experience, but it's all up to you really.
Don't overdo the mods or mutators liek I tend to do, since it really clogs up the performace of the game overall.
