It attempts to optimize the game by compressing textures. From my testing, it only makes a difference if you already have pretty bad computer specs. It somewhat cuts down on the amount of memory used, but it's nothing special.

Why does this include GasMask.png? It's a vanilla item and texture, and this texture is not similarly duplicated in the original mod.

I don't use this mod, but the work you are doing is wonderful... Thank you for everything. Is there a possibility to add mod suggestions so that they receive such optimization?
