I really wish there was a mod that also increased the rate at which rivers spawned. Too damn rare in the base game.

This is a very useful mod for a lot of map types that sometimes make it impossible to discover trading partners for the first 200 or so turns of a game (basically larger island maps), unless you're playing as Polynesia. It should also be noted that the AI definitely benefits from this as well, and now AI players rarely go into the negative, which overall makes gameplay better and a little more challenging. Thumbs up. The hate for it is totally unwarranted, as it's a mod, and can be enabled or disabled at will.
kodakohl 17 Sep, 2021 @ 8:01pm
Hi, I know that not many people probably play this game anymore, but this mod isn't appearing in my mod file and the external link doesn't work for me. If there is an alternate download please let me know!!!
WolfCrossing 27 Feb, 2021 @ 8:18pm
Love this mod, but a description in an earlier comment is true. Definitely turns the drought into a flood, but if you hate hate HATE the early game inability to build anything, this definitely helps.
Combine it with "trading posts grow into towns" mod and your rivers will turn into gold powerhouses that you'll struggle with building farms instead of trading posts. Hah.

I've been looking for a mod that makes rivers work as roads etween your cities, like they did in civ IV. Any idea wgere to find one, or perhaps you could make one? :P
QuantumPaws 21 Jan, 2017 @ 12:12am
I find this mod immensely useful because the other civs gets more gold and therefore is more challenging. Works perfectly with CBP and other mods.
TofuSojo  [author] 8 May, 2016 @ 5:37pm
@Animalbge Only reason I can think of why it would be on your mod list twice is if you have two different versions or maybe copies of the same version (if it even lets you do that). And no mods can be used in multiplayer normally.
Animalbge 26 Apr, 2016 @ 3:33pm
Can you one tell me why when using the mod manger loader that it comes up twice and I am not able to use it in a mult player game?
TofuSojo  [author] 21 Dec, 2015 @ 3:50am
@wailwulf I don't know how to do that or if it even can be done with a simple mod. I balance it by using other mods that adds buildings to the game, increasing maintenance costs.
Wailwulf 13 Dec, 2015 @ 4:55pm
I like the mod, just feel it does a little too much. Basically it seems to turm the drought into a flood. Would tweak it so gold only appears in every fourth coast and river tile
crashburn274 29 Sep, 2015 @ 8:20am
Works. I love it, but the balance is somewhat out of wack when it comes to gaining control of city states. AI just doesn't know how to spend gold on them, and the surplusses this mod provides in the late game make diplomatic rather silly.
TofuSojo  [author] 23 Dec, 2014 @ 4:16pm
@aidan.cowen Nope. Because the line of code would just override the one that was already there which says the same thing.
Ruby 23 Dec, 2014 @ 3:12pm
if this mod did work for GaK and vanilla would the coasts and rivers give 2 gold?
Bickdalls 7 Oct, 2014 @ 2:35am
Bump* I found that river mountain has gold
joaquin505 6 Oct, 2014 @ 9:26am
yeah i fixed it i've never used the mods before and thought you just had to enable them but then i noticed that you had to click next and set it all up before it works
TofuSojo  [author] 6 Oct, 2014 @ 8:52am
@Joaquin546 You have BNW right? Because Vanilla and G&K have this built in, so you wouldn't see any difference with them. Other than that there shouldn't be any problem.
joaquin505 6 Oct, 2014 @ 8:46am
i can't seem to get this mod to work i have enabled it and currently is the only mod i have on my civ game but when i start a new game with this mod enabled but it doesn't seem to work
Bickdalls 3 Oct, 2014 @ 6:39pm
I found that the mountain is also affected. LOL
TofuSojo  [author] 2 Oct, 2014 @ 1:10pm
@maobe & Jedi Ranger Kendor The only mods with which this wouldn't work are those that delete Coast Tiles or Rivers from the game, as all it does it gives them +1 gold.
Jedi Ranger Kendor 2 Oct, 2014 @ 12:03pm
Would this work with the ENI mod?
ArcaneGamer 29 Sep, 2014 @ 3:59pm
As well as ships...
ArcaneGamer 29 Sep, 2014 @ 3:58pm
I wish we could send naval trade units along rivers.
maobe 29 Sep, 2014 @ 8:23am
Seems not to work with IGE activated?
jsnider193 29 Sep, 2014 @ 3:57am
nice mod .. using and works great for the AI and me.
Floris 29 Sep, 2014 @ 3:56am
heh
TofuSojo  [author] 28 Sep, 2014 @ 5:02pm
@Stannis I don't believe so. I remade this mod because the one I used to use that did they same was no longer on Steam. With just Notepad anyone can open the sole xml file for this mod and delete or comment out the bonus gold given to river tiles. So you can have exactly what you want in your own copy of it. That's how I starting modding :). That much at least is super easy.
Pigeon 28 Sep, 2014 @ 3:21pm
Is there currently a mod that makes coastal tiles give off gold but not river tiles? I would use the crap outta that mod, but as it stands I feel like rivers giving gold will not be beneficial to my games. If there is one already or can be one made, please let me know!
Damien 28 Sep, 2014 @ 10:19am
I find it hilarious that peeps are forcing Tofusojo to defend this mod from the haters ie J-viz, Vampirhoden, HATERS plain and simple, Im so food I dont need this mod, lol well then FO and dont use it. Also keep your stupid ass opinions to yourself, If you dont have anything nice to say STFU. This is not your mod ands no one is forcing it upon you, I find the term "inexperienced player" funny as hell. Experienced player gives you the right to hate on someone elses mod? I think tyhe whole idea of a mod is to give a player his choice of how he/she wants to play the game. Hating on and bashing on a mod just shows the rest of us who to streer clear of as you two are obviously vain and better than any others who play. Regadless of what you think the early game gold income is a joke, this mod balances that out so use it or dont use it but stop bashing and claiming that your so good.
Areth 28 Sep, 2014 @ 8:14am
This was a feature in G&K, Vanilla, and every Civ game before, those didnt get too dominate because its only 1 gold. Even if you put down a trading post its only 3. It is actualy very realistic and I think its a pretty good idea.
Merilisra 28 Sep, 2014 @ 7:29am
I disagree with this. BNW's gold comes from trade routes and buldings. This is just op and making early game domination way too easy with the gold so you dont have too much problems with the maintance or city spamming civilizations. Rivers and coasts are way too easy to find or get. It would be cool if you get gold for each tile your trade route goes. That is op in late game but it wouldnt be that op if you cant upgrade the land trade routes.
geldoon 28 Sep, 2014 @ 2:40am
Some people have made some good points both for and against this mod but the best point is made by the creator: if you think it's OP then don't use it. Lets face it the only reason those people who claimed this mod was OP bothered to take the time to download it, use it and then comment was so they could slip in a line like "learn to play properly and you wont a need a mod like this"(direct quote, not my typos ;) ) and let everyone know how fantastic they are at playing Civ. Of course they probably didn't try it at all. If you don't like it, don't use it, stop telling us all how great you are and how bad we must be, it's not the point of the comments section to bash other players ('I play on Diety and Immortal, actually' ooooo, we're not worthy, we're not worthy).
КОТ 2 28 Sep, 2014 @ 1:59am
Nice
Uncleshirly 27 Sep, 2014 @ 5:51pm
Instead of debating whether this mod is OP or not, either download the mod or just skip over it. Nobody is forcing you to download it.
rudebox 27 Sep, 2014 @ 3:16pm
How does it take centuries to research animal husbandry? :/
People need to chill out though, not like civ is an esport
Yung Whizzurd 27 Sep, 2014 @ 3:14pm
Didnt know elitism was so present in 4x games. What a bunch of fuckwads.
adrynroy 27 Sep, 2014 @ 2:27pm
too easy to make gold in the game, learn to play properly and you wont a need mod like this
TofuSojo  [author] 27 Sep, 2014 @ 9:21am
@Vampirhoden As I said in my original post, this mod is for realistic fun and to balance the missing gold in early game. What to do about the excess gold later on, is another issue. As the AI gets it too -- and as ArtificialPenguins pointed out it is something, but not a huge amount of gold -- I really don't see the problem with that. That may actually be an improvement: in most of the Civ franchise we've made lots of gold and been able to spend it on things. Civ 5 was the first to impoverish world powers. Also, this just gives everyone more reason to fight over land by coasts and rivers, again, just like in real life :). All I can really say is every mod is subjective, so if you try a game or two with it and you don't like it, don't use it. I share these with everyone, just to share. These are what I play the game with.
it's cran apple 27 Sep, 2014 @ 7:45am
It's really over powered. Having a city by a couple of rivers will yield you about 50 gold per turn by turn 120.
Harald Töpfer 27 Sep, 2014 @ 7:36am
Speaking of Rivers being highly desireable:
They are.
Water- and windmill are two pretty strong buildings, you get 25% more gold on trade routes and you are able to build the hydro plant.
Harald Töpfer 27 Sep, 2014 @ 7:31am
I am playing on Immortal too.
I know the problems you describe, I had them when I was starting with BNW too.
But what should I say, as I became more experienced with BNW they just.... Disappeared.
I´m milking AIs for gold now and I think more carefully about what I really need to have for buildings in my cities and I shortened my military too, especially early game.

As long as your mod provides the gold bonus for AIs too it should be balanced anyway, since the AIs are using these tiles too
Ghost Waffles 27 Sep, 2014 @ 5:39am
Lel i have had BNW for so long i forgot this whole feature... XD
UnaidedFrog5883 27 Sep, 2014 @ 4:00am
this mod is heaven to me
Jhaak 26 Sep, 2014 @ 10:36pm
Ok well here's the thing. It's a mod so people bashing it chill out. No one is forcing this mod into your game. If people want it, they can have it. Don't just tell them to get better.

@Honorbound: Is this game is real life? :)

"Gold on coasts and rivers are an OP mechanic because that would mean players near those tiles would have an advantage over players with no rivers or coasts -_-"

Like real life? :D
❦ յεηïκα ❧ 26 Sep, 2014 @ 11:50am
I play on Immortal and Deity actually. Only inexperienced or simply bad players often find themselves strapped for cash in the early game due to improper usage of workable tiles, generalizing instead of specializing cities, etc. Try learning how to economize properly instead.
TofuSojo  [author] 26 Sep, 2014 @ 9:13am
Also, you are totally missing the impressive point of the mod, this represents local trade that would exist in the region with or without a city; coasts and rivers are supposed to be highly desireable, just like in real life; and this feature has been in pretty much every Civ game until 5, which removed many of the features we long-time Civ players love and remember. Most importantly though, did you try out the mod and see what affect it had on your income? I've found, though it's helpful in early game, it has a barely noticeable impact on the late game, if any at all.
TofuSojo  [author] 26 Sep, 2014 @ 9:13am
@Vampirhoden & J-viz Unless you two only ever play on low difficulty levels, you should know that most players are strapped for cash in the early game (before you can build any trade routes let alone lucrative ones which take a few centuries, especially considering you have to clear their routes of Barbarians-spawning darkness). Yes it's true BNW adds ways to make lots of money later in the game, but their balancing solution was flawed. They should have made thing more expensive in the mid to late game so you'd need that new higher income from trade routes in my opinion.
❦ յεηïκα ❧ 26 Sep, 2014 @ 8:51am
Have you ever heard of these things called trading caravans and trading ships? Obviously not lol. Gold on coasts and rivers are an OP mechanic because that would mean players near those tiles would have an advantage over players with no rivers or coasts -_-
