The reason i priced them higher and not the same as other sword units like Bretonnian men at arms or empire state troops, is actually pretty simple. They are a 160 unit models, and they have harmony buffs. When you combine the 2 (not to mention other peasant buffs) for a sword unit that is oriented for offense. You can get a pretty strong peasant unit for early game.

I really like these peasants, but I think you've overpriced them in order to keep them balanced. They must not only be compared to the Peasant Spearnen, which are anti-large, but other "sword" infantry from other armies. Comparing them to Bretonnian Men-at-Arms (250) and same unit with Shields (300) the Peasant Swordsmen have better leadership by +10 and charge by +8, but they got -15 armor and -14 defense as well as less weapon damage by -2. Costing (425) by comparison makes them quite overpriced even with their Harmony bonus. If however they cost the same as the Bretonnians, perhaps between (275-325) this would put them in the same price category considering their overall similar performance. (425) however is a bit much for a unit that's arguably struggling against common goblins, also (300).

Of course, it is your mod. Feel free to keep the price where it is if you feel it is still correct since they do slightly better than the spear peasants in peasant on peasant violence.

@tehjdot I checked it in game and i'm getting the armor buffs. Perhaps it was something you encountered before i updated the mod 2 hours ago?

Hey Orendiz! I've just been trying out this mod. It seems that the Peasant Swordsmen don't count as melee units for the armour buffs when playing Zhao Ming! I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. I see that the Celestial Dragon Guard with Great Weapons in the tool tip pop up though!

Yep, i pretty much fixed all of those as well. I noticed that several peasant lines were missing and now it should include all the buffs that peasant spearmen get. (i'm yet to check if that gives them some sort of anti large buff though.)

Also, I realised in the interim that they didn't seem to be benefiting from his other "for melee units" skills (Desert armor / weapons, I believe they are), and you might want to check the faction effect of +15 armour as well!

I partially agree on your argument, but also I don't. We're all different I guess.

Also logistics wise, kinda like with my empire spearmen buff. The peasant long spearmen have a very long spear. That creates a lot of distance which in tern makes you more defended.

And like you said in the example, the spears have more defense while my sword unit has more attack.

There's a fine line between having 2 variants and one of them being obsolite the moment you can recruit the other. Peasant swordsmen can perform surprisingly well in melee especially with harmony buffs. They are also shielded so wont get insta routed from arrows, so already with that, you have more/about the same defense as the long spearman variant.

I like the idea of having to choose damage oriented or defense oriented between the two. If i buff the swordsmen the spearmen kind of become useless other then taking 2 or 3 to deal with large units. Becouse the swordsmen will have better melee attack, better defense, shielded, and their only downside would be no anti large and charge reflect.

Empire suffers the same problem as the moment you get spearmen with shields, swordsmen become pointless to recruit as you rather get more crossbows with spearmen then replace some of the crossbows for a slightly more damage oriented state troop with worse melee defense.

How can a shielded unit have less defence? The balance between sword and spears are more like:

Swords = More Melee attack, charge bonus and weapon damage.
Spear = More melee defence and bonus vs large

Granted they are, ofc, of the same tier and same variant group.
Compare with Empire spears and Empire swordsmen
