Will be out in two weeks or so. Might need to postpone depending on animation work but it should be out by the end of august. (yes, hopefully they will flap soon.)

Yes, I might have mispoken earlier but I meant it will be getting an update to 1.6 further down the line compared to the rest of my other mods. It is currently in active development. The new update isn't just for 1.6 but also many new features that have been planned and worked on in the past.

1.6 Update won't be coming along the rest of my other mod updates, as Vehicle Framework isn't 1.6 compatible and is currently working on a new major update.

All current translation mods, including the built in chinese and spanish translations, will also be broken upon the next Ornithopter update, so please be aware of this.

That's weird, if possible, see if any other vehicle mods does this, as this might be a vehicle framework issue moreso than an ornithopter one.

Can't seem to use this for trading with other settlements? I only get an attack option.

Can't make the wings fold back, sorry. The ornithopter however has it so that the main hitbox is on the chasis though, so you can still build props, walls and so fourth underneath the wings like in the screenshot above.

I'm also really looking forward to what you have planned! One of those big troop carrier orni's would be friggin' awesome.

Also, I have no idea of this is possible with how the framework works but if the wings could be folded back while grounded and unfolded upon takeoff *chef's kiss*.

Next update adds new vehicles and overhauls all the stats, so I will be posting the updated stats when the update comes. Sorry for the inconvenience! If you are still curious however, you can go into the mod files and look for the vehiclepawn.xml file and see what the current stats are. (Opening it via notepad or as a .txt file works too!)

No, usually you don't paint propellers and blades irl. Plus since these blades vibrate alot (in lore at least) I sorta don't think its fitting in that aspect. I also have made the textures for all the new vehicles and a re-texture of the current, so I probably won't be revisiting redoing the blades anytime soon, sorry about that.

Speaking of, the code for that update (with new vehicles and it's extensive upgrade system) is still being worked on, and I'm mainly a mod artist, not a programmer, so please don't ask for a timeline of release, as I genuinely have no idea myself. All this sorta beyond my skillset and I'm sorta taking my time to make sure it gets out in the best quality.

An expansion sure will happen, sadly I'm more of an artist and lets just say I'm still a bit stuck on some code and framework expansions to implement said code. Hopefully it wont stay an issue too long thou! :)

Sorta did that off of a whim ngl, new preview images should be out once I add these 2 new ornithopters in the next update. Whether upgrades will be part of the update I’m not too sure as of now.

I am pretty sure you can use vehicles to trade, although I haven't checked in a while. Might be best to ask on the VF mod comments and discord, as this mod doesn't touch core game play mechanics, simply just adds a vehicle. However double check to see if the settlement is of a hostile faction, as that might be the issue.

hey, is it possible to use it for trade? When sending it to another colony i can only attack and if i land outside i cant split the caravan or send it on land. Or is it a mod conflict?

@Happycam i tried to do some schinanigans but they all looked bad so i did some research and this is what author of vehicle expanded smash phill said
there's no built in support yet for animating overlays (eg. thrusters moving, flaps opening, etc.) but I'll add it at some point
you could add support for it through c# cause the superclass is set up for that kind of thing, but there's no pre-existing class for that kind of stuff

@Happycam it would be posible to rotate the vehicle at landing if you changed the ornithopeter to plane with really short landing space but you are right as a helicoper its impossible.
you would theoreticaly need to create an engine separate from vehicle expanded which is absurd

Probably not in all honesty. I currently have plans and stuff in development that might conflict if I did that down the road. I do plan to add more complex construction parts but that will have to wait til my mods currently in development are completed or at least having its code worked on.

Any chance for a patch for Vanilla Vehicles Expanded that changes the requirements to use the parts from that mod to build it if it's installed?

It will be a whole lot better, and I plan to have it out in the next week or so. Will be limited in combat uses, more expensive and have lower fuel efficiency and speed, but it will have a large passenger and cargo hold with better range. Overall better vehicle, and the size wont be that much larger than the current light ornithopter.

Not too sure, but the range of this aircraft is already quite long, almost going half way across the planet (planet size set to 100% without mods, which is pretty big) 2x the range of the best helicopter as well as 1.8x the speed as the fastest helicopter when compared to Vanilla Expanded (Including their Tier 3 mod). This is of course without upgrades which are planned, as well as how there will be another ornithopter that will be more cargo/passenger oriented with a longer range. It too will have it's own trade offs, but these two vehicles with upgrades will pretty much be incredibly overpowered. The current ornithopter is also meant to be moreso a light attack helicopter so once aircraft combat becomes a thing, it will serve a greater purpose than currently present.

Thanks @Clockwork! I have a massive vehicle mod project still in the works so I will probably only work on an update adding 1 more ornithopter and then upgrades/ fixes and call it a day. Chances are I will need the money for a coder for the main project. Hope you like the mod thou!

Hey Happycam. I love the concept of this and would love to see a full rendition of different variants as well as the wings folded or unfolded on landing/take-off. I did read that you aren't a coder. If you have the money, I know several coders who'd probably take you up on this. Love the work you've put in it.

@Tal'Raziid Vehicle Framework doesn't allow rotating the helicopter for landings at the moment. Nothing I can do on my end.

@Rtepper I’m familiar with vanilla expander’s vehicles but the helicopter blade rotates 360 degrees. The issue here is making a vibration or a simple blade texture will rotate all around the ornithopter, which isn’t supposed to be the case here. I’m going to see if we can get the blade spinning at a set angle but I’m not really a programmer, and suck at coding, so I wouldn’t expect it. I’d anyone wants to volunteer with helping me with making the blade only spin a few degrees to give it a vibrating effect when active, go ahead and send me the XML file or whatnot. I’ll be happy to give credit in a reasonable manner and integrate it into the mod. I am looking for quality over a half measure however, just be aware I won’t just accept anything.

I can't rotate ornithopters when landing, do you know why? Its not all aircraft, just some of them (namely this and the Grimwrold valkyrie, so far)

@happycam I think it would be possible to make that vibrating look whilst flying at least in vanilla vehicles expanded there is a helicopter which has rotating texture on top whilst flying and stationary texture whilst on ground I'll try to look at it later

@Naymy I am using the Vanilla Expanded Props and Furniture mods for the hanger appearance. Just know this isn't a functioning colony, just used dev mode and just made what I thought looked cool for a screenshot. Pretty sure the ornithopter won't work in roofed area like in the screenshot, but these mods are an overall great way to make your base look nice and lived in, I would highly recommend it!!!

@Double Helix I thought about it but an overwhealming majority of the time you will only see this aircraft on the ground, stationed on a helipad just waiting. I think it would look alot weirder if the ornithopter had it's wings vibrating constantly on the ground for a majority of the time than for it to be stationary and rested when taking off. Plus with a helicopter taking off with rotating and animated propellers next to the ornithopter, I think it will make the texture alot weirder looking. I will be looking into finding a way to animate the wings, but currently I think its best to simply keep the rested appearance.

@I blame Earthshaker If you want more people, I would recommend doing what Rtepper stated. I however would like to clarify that I plan to revisit this mod and add a troop carrier variant, with the current ornithopter available becoming a high mobility/attack variant. Probably should have done the troop carrier first given attack aircraft isn't possible with the framework lol, but don't worry y'all, I still have plans for this mod in the future and will be adding the troop carrier version later on. It is a bit larger but can carry a crap ton of cargo and a decent passenger count.
