Better Drying Rack

Can you also please add adjustable drying times for different meats? I have a debug save with a pig king, but they'll only accept monster meat if it's jerky, so I want to be able to dry monster meat instantly. Thanks!

Love, Space Core. :autonautwuv:

P.S. SPAAAAACE!!!

I have come to this conclusion. When you are forced to only use raw meat to make jerky, you have to take down your already up jerky to put up the new ones. And when you do that begins a spoiling process of the now picked jerky.

Lets say you have a ton of food in your inventory. Now you have all this jerky on top of it. The chances that some of this food is going to go to waste now is pretty high. This adds an extra bit of challenge to the game. Forcing you to time your food harvesting right so you don't end up wasting any. Now if you are able to cook the meat you can double the time you can keep it without it spoiling. Giving you more time to eat the food you have, before having to harvest your dry racks and replace with the new meat.

Now you just have Jerky and no worries of wasting any food by spoilage. And by wasting i'm referring to either eating food with a full belly or spoilage. So in other words this mod does make the game easier. Removing that challenge.

And one more thing. Even if this mod didn't do what i described, it is still clear that it allows people to alter their mistake. Oops! I cooked my meat! No worries i can still dry it thanks to this mod. This in itself takes away yet another challenge in the game. Making mistakes. The wilderness is a harsh and UNFORGIVING place.

Btw. I am a big fan of your mods and i thank you for making this one. Even though personally it is not for me. :reheart:

Thanks!

Now that my base game is running again, your mod is working just fine. No issues to be found.
Zalphinian 7 Jan, 2015 @ 5:41pm
@Mouse
Well, I got the issues cleared up with my base world. Seems for some reason I wasn't running it as an administrator, and that was the problem. I'll be trying out the world with mods today and I'll keep you updated. Yours is at the top of my list to try.

If it's crashing during world generation, I'll need to see your log after it crashes.
Zalphinian 5 Jan, 2015 @ 8:47pm
Well, may not be an issue with the mod. As trying to trouble shoot I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game, but it's still crashing on me any time I try to generate a world.
Zalphinian 29 Dec, 2014 @ 1:34am
@[#!].mouse Much thanks. I'll be looking into this more in the next few days to see if I can isolate anything else that might be causing the issue (like incompatability with another mod).

Yeah no kidding. It's not like you're getting 2 peices of meat for everyone 1 or something.

Every time I enable this mod in the mod menu, my game crashes about 15 seconds later.

"Without challenge, there is no fun. It's not hypocritical, it's just true. Although it's only my opinion"

... you should read that again and find whats was wrong with those string of words.
Charlii 21 Oct, 2014 @ 2:47pm
Ty for the mod, I didn't know it! Let's try it now!
🐭  [author] 21 Oct, 2014 @ 6:58am
@Charlii
Actually you are being hypocritical, or at the very least, you're contradicting yourself. You're saying: 1.There's no fun without challenge. 2. Don't Starve isn't hard. Following your logic, Don't Starve isn't fun. So why do you care if this mod decreases the challenge? It's already boring to you right?

And this may blow your mind, but not everybody thinks "challenge" is the same thing as "fun". If there's no fun without challenge then how has piss easy games like Portal, Garry's mod or Borderlands made it this far?

Besides, converting cooked meat into jerky barely impacts challenge at all. You're still only getting one piece of food in the end. All this mod does is give you the option to undo an oversight, either on your part or Klei's. It's hardly worth getting all upset over and it's certainly not a cheat.

But if you're obsessed with challenge then I've got the perfect mod for you .
Charlii 21 Oct, 2014 @ 5:57am
I just meant that it's a survival game. Without challenge, there is no fun. It's not hypocritical, it's just true. Although it's only my opinion, and I don't know why people should feel bad for using it because I gave a negative opinion about this sort of mod.
🐭  [author] 21 Oct, 2014 @ 5:30am
@Charlii
This comment is real hypocritical. It ruins people's fun and tries to make them feel bad for using it. If you don't like the mod, just try to find a new one or make your own... I would especially like it if you made your own so I can criticize the everloving shit out of it. Keeping your negative opinions to yourself is not that hard...
Charlii 21 Oct, 2014 @ 2:51am
This mod is real cheat. It ruins the games and makes it too easy. If you coocked meat, just try to kill some pigs or beefalos to get some... Hit and run, use tooth trap, lureplants, spiders to help you. Don't starve is not that hard...
PeaceMaker 20 Oct, 2014 @ 6:23am
I like this :D
TheDeadDude 19 Oct, 2014 @ 9:27am
Genius! You have no idea how many times i keep forgetting not to cook my meat so i can dry it.
VinchenzoTheJackal & Shoon 19 Oct, 2014 @ 8:29am
This is a great idea!
iNol 12 Oct, 2014 @ 3:05am
This is good. Giving more options to process stale cooked meat than just feed to bird to make egg.
JustJasper 11 Oct, 2014 @ 8:23am
I think this causes a conflict with the Waiter 101 mod, error on a 'preserved' function.
Serakth 10 Oct, 2014 @ 2:32pm
Is this good when cooked meat is about to get stale? I never really use a drying rack.
Archn_Scythe 9 Oct, 2014 @ 10:56pm
I thought that you already could put cooked meat on drying racks. Or is that crock pots?
Xhorxh Bush 8 Oct, 2014 @ 1:25pm
Yeah. I harbor no grudge against these kinds of mods, or their modders, it just feels like I'm guilty whenever I use them.

Ah what you're refering to is called the dominant strategy theory. It basically means once a person is made aware of a method or strategy that works better or has a better outcome than all previous methods or strategies, then that's what the person will always do first. It seems like common sense to me but someone decided it needed a more scientific sounding name. I do the same thing with portal tests other people make though. Once I find an exploit or an overlooked skip, I don't bother trying to solve it the intended way and instead grade it based on how gamebreaking or how obvious the skip should have been when making the test.
Xhorxh Bush 7 Oct, 2014 @ 1:56pm
I guess I just find it weird to edit the balance Klei has made. I'm not against it, it just feels unnatural. Whenever I get something that eases the gamepay, I unconciously exploit it to the point where DS isn't even fun anymore, so that factors into a discomfort with re-balancing mods I guess.
alexshots 7 Oct, 2014 @ 3:41am
wonderful mod! but i thought, if you add leafy meat and cooked leafy meat , which can be hung onto drying racks and get normal jerky, that would be even greater!!
🐭  [author] 7 Oct, 2014 @ 1:51am
@Dryicefox
I don't know a whole lot about making jerky but from what I understand, common jerky is made in a dehydrator or an oven so it seems likely the jerky in DS isn't "jerky" in the conventional sense.

As far as being healthier goes, long story short, it turns out animal fat is VERY good for you and oils like vegetable oil, corn oil, canola oil and pretty much any oil that isn't lard, actually increases your chance for heart disease. While lard itself can lower your LDL levels and help raise your HDL. So I don't think it would be healthier to cook the animal fats out of your meat before you dry it. tl;dr: Use lard, trash all other oils.
BasedNetCode.wav 7 Oct, 2014 @ 12:13am
I like this. Wouldn't this, in reality, make the process faster and healthier?

(For those other hardcores, don't give me shit about it being a game when you have shit like hardcore mode that enters bleeding and broken bones into a game where health is measured by a meter instead of a percentage.)

Makes a hellova lot of sense to be able to make jerky with cooked meat.

We know. I don't think anyone is singling you out here. This has been a long time ongoing thing within the modding community, and the gaming industry as a whole. Difficulty affecting mods vs hyper critical tryhards. If you make a mod that removes a small part of the game that violently assaults you, spits in your face and calls your mother a whore every time you screw up in the slightest, suddenly people all over the place call it OP and say it's only for untalented cheating noobs. I don't know if it's egotism, classism or just an almost fetishistic love for game-over/loading screens, but these people take it way too far. If they like a challenge, then good, great, couldn't be happier for them. But not everybody in the world enjoys a kick to the nuts every time they flap their arms and don't fly. Know what I mean?
Xhorxh Bush 6 Oct, 2014 @ 1:22pm
I wasn't really critisizing the mod, just saying how it's funny that we break the fine balance Klei has set. I myself would probably use this mod, so that's really what my main point was with the original comment. "It makes me half dissapointed that the community needs these cheats, and half guilty for being one of the people that wants them .
🐭  [author] 6 Oct, 2014 @ 12:03pm
@Я | Shady Badger™
That's the right attitude to have! It's not the mod that defines the game's difficulty, it's the person using it. Just because you can use something in an exploitive or game-breaking way doesn't mean you have to. I let everyone set the challenge to their own liking and it shouldn't matter if they set the spoil time to 5 days or 100, as long as they're happy with it.
Shady Badger 6 Oct, 2014 @ 11:30am
I don't think it's entirely cheating to be able to dry-out cooked meats. The whole configurable jerkey spoil rate is kind of cheaty, but I feel like drying cooked meats should've just been a thing. Subbed for that element, but I doubt I'll ever give myself non-spoiling health potions in the form of jerkey. Seems too easy.
Xhorxh Bush 5 Oct, 2014 @ 8:46am
I'd seen that before, but I've never tried it. I think I finally will. I'll report back to you on my progress.
SirGarde 5 Oct, 2014 @ 8:45am
lol i know i would use that mod but its a bit unfiar with the permant health loss its not hard at that point its just game breaking

I love how we're all ruining the balancing elements Klei put in, bit by bit. It makes me half dissapointed that the community needs these cheats, and half guilty for being one of the people that wants them.
