There is a limited amount of AI in the game to make the turrets functional but you are right there would need to be an addition of a completely new AI Scripting and model rendering for NPCs Hence the idea of the modding communty coming together to create it.

Sorry, Space Engineers' scripting engine dosent allow animated AI / NPCs right now as far as I'm concerned. I could be wrong.
Alright, I will say it as many ways as I can; Character Skin, Player Skin, Character Model, Player Model, New Suit, Suit Model, & Suit Texture. All of those represent a Character Model / Skin Textures.
