Also just remembered, if you remove $phong. You may want to add $halflambert.
$phong automatically enables $halflambert which is used on I think every HL2 character as it cheats the lighting abit and help hides Source's pre-vertex lighting.

If a model doesn't have specular maps, it's usually better to then do no $phong as it looks cleaner.

Phong is more meant for skin with a specular texture just for it. (Which is why doing $phong actually just changes VertexLitGeneric to be the skin shader in the engine's code lol)

The devs didn't make specular maps for him and I was too lazy to make my own so I patched it up with phong, originally it was very high so I had to make it very small
