Impasse is infantry only and much smaller scale without any vehicles. Total war is a completely new game with vehicles everywhere and spans the whole map. They share the capture a zone that has a flag gameplay.

I've recently played Impasse Total War without any attack vehicles (transports only) which was really fun and still quite different than Impasse. I wrote Impasse first and used it as the base for making Total War.
