Ah, gotcha. Good luck with the mod.
@Mantis, I was talking about the visual changes. Since Reclamier finally supports Halo 2 MCC Maps, I compared it between it and the E3 version and both of them are the same, but the E3 SMG is higher quality than its retail counterpart. Guess i'll be using the E3 SMG for my Halo: CE Overhaul Mod after all (Especially the Battle Rifle)

AFAIK, the E3 SMG is a basic weapon that technically is a single-wielded weapon that appears to be dual-wielded. There is no dual-wield function in the game engine. You can't drop one of the SMGs, for example. The guns cannot be fired independently either. Otherwise, I think they have a higher rate of fire than in the final game, but maybe that's just me.
I have a question, what's the difference between the E3 2003 SMG and final version of the SMG?

I was expecting this level when I got Halo 2 as a kid. This is so cool!

When you first saw Halo, were you blinded by its majesty?
Isgud 15 Apr @ 10:55pm

YO how are the first person weapon animations far better in the demo and beta than the final version?!?!! wtf were they thinking?! omg bro...

I'm not sure how anyone could find it mid. :Shocker: But each to their own. The E3 2003 demo's literally my favourite memory of Halo 2. It's possibly because I found the finished game a disappointment (I know, it's an unpopular opinion) and would rank Halo CE and Halo 3 more highly in that order.

Obviously, if this interpretation of New Mombasa had made it into Halo 2 it would have been a fully functional mission. This is a sequence of scripted events. Bungie had to get something ready for E3 and didn't need to do more than what was necessary for a few minutes of gameplay.

I'm not sure why Bungie decided against the original New Mombasa but I'd guess after they had to scrap the original engine and all they made for it, by the time they got to New Mombasa in the story, they simply thought a daytime approach would be better. Maybe that's something to do with the Scarab, who knows.

Regardless, Halo 2 was rushed and we ended up getting a half-finished and unbalanced sequel.

Meh I can see why they didn't put that in the game, the demo was mid at best if not broken.

My original soundtracks for Crash Site, Alpha Moon and the E3 2003 credits (in with Alpha Moon) are all now available on most streaming platforms! Just look me up and you'll find 'em.

I'm 33 years old. I remember watching this preview and reading the different articles in game magazines about the play through as a child. I also remember being really bummed that the scenes were removed from the game.

I can't say how much I appreciate this.

Thank you.

a wonderful blast from the past

@loRd_Of this is a bug when playing h2 in a different language. If your game for example defaults to german, then the demo will play english voices, but wont animate the spoken lines. Your default game language has to be english. This fixes the lip sync issue.

Don't know if a common problem. The NPCs' mouths don't open when they speak during cutscene.

This was really special.
It's a shame how this situation has turned out, but it was a good thing that this team dedicated to getting this work done. It might seem trivial, but to some of us it's grand.

I try to explain to some of these younger guys upset with 343, that Halo went off course starting with Halo 2. Great game, but it just wasn't the direction things were supposed to go in.
This demo, now playable, is like an artifact of this time back then. When most of Halo was in a state of potential, and it was beautiful.

There's a certain vibe, a strong undercurrent of feeling, present in the style of this version of New Mombasa. I could get long-winded on that alone, but IYKYK. It was a special vision of a futuristic sci-fi world that we never really got, from 343 OR Bungie.

It seems the whole world went down the wrong path at this same time.

This was important work. Never forget that. Thank you.

"Halo, it's finished"
"No, I think we're just getting started."

Dear digsite, we love you, fuck Microsoft
Songbird 1 Jan @ 10:58am
Sorry to hear about how Microsoft treated you. It's a damn shame they screwed you over, even when they recognized you were doing great work.

What you brought to the Halo community was fantastic. Thank you and good luck with whatever you guys do after this. Hopefully it'll be much more lucrative, fulfilling, and less painful than what you had to go through.
Oi Its Trav 1 Jan @ 10:06am
As a kid I'd watch the digsite E3 over and over. I never thought I'd be able to play it one day. This is amazing. Great work from the digsite team.

Microsoft doesn't know a good thing if it hit them in the face.

Not gonna lie, playing this brought tears to my eyes. As someone who's been with Halo since 2001, it was amazing to not only see this again but being able to actually PLAY IT?? Incredible. You guys are truly legends for restoring this.
