can you make ward kimball s backyard railroad ?
RandomUser 24 Mar @ 6:26am
I think a great map idea (especially for the people who like narrow gauge) would be the Glenwood & Black Creek layout. It's a really great narrow gauge model railroad with lots of operations and scenery. It's very large, though, so you might need to do some compression.
Jake4159 10 Mar @ 5:11pm
Do you plan on using "a" 3D model for the landscapes? Like i did in my map? https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3334645679

The high ram usage is due to the million of trees. I can explain how I did it if you are ever interested. :steamhappy: It saves a lot on the frames.

We have several currently in development, but none of them.are far enough along to show off yet. We'll announce them when we're ready!
Jake4159 10 Mar @ 12:29pm
Is your team planning on making an other map?

speechless just speechless.

I'll put it bluntly; this is easily one of the greatest rl maps ever, from the amazing details down to the custom trains themselves, this is quite literally the masterclass of rl mods. It is very hard to cram all I want to say into this, so I'll leave on this. Thank you, all of you, who helped create this beautiful layout you all did an outstanding job. Keep up the great work, and again, thanks.
sergeant_0ddball 14 Feb @ 8:56pm
you are most welcome, and I can't wait to see what the next project is for your group! I don't want to be like the people in the comments saying "pls this" or "can you do X, y, or Z", but personally, a rather infamous model railroad (Sadly lost last year) that I would love to see is the Milwaukee, Racine, and Troy or John Armstrong's canandaigua southern (I always find it rather funny that two of the pioneers of the model railroading hobby were both named John!)
SomeRailfan  [author] 14 Feb @ 8:48pm
Thanks for the kind words as well!
SomeRailfan  [author] 14 Feb @ 8:47pm
Yeah, we've noticed that as well. I've spent a while trying to fix it and I'm not exactly sure why it happens. My guess is the momentum of the trains on the section not going towards Great Divide is causing them to overshoot the signal as they slow down, which unfortunately there's not really a way to solve. I've got a fix that might work though, and I'm hoping to include it in a future update :)
sergeant_0ddball 14 Feb @ 8:04pm
Just a quick heads up, every now and then there is a collision at the diamond on Cross Junction that will throw all of the AI trains out of whack if you don't catch it in time. I was riding around on the passenger train when my locomotive derailed the rear three cars of a freight, and another time there was a single passenger car derailed. I'm not sure how you could fix this, maybe add a few extra signals here or there.

Otherwise, this is an AMAZING layout, as everyone has said. I do believe that John would be proud to know his layout lives on in the hearts of so many people, and that he inspired so many model railroaders long after his layout was sadly lost. Thank you so much, each and every one of you, for bringing this fantastic railroad back to life in the virtual world!

what will this look like in the 21st century?
therealtrainfan119 23 Jan @ 4:17pm
oh ok
SomeRailfan  [author] 19 Jan @ 10:39pm
All of the freight cars are in the mod collection, you can find it in the description. The ski gondola isn't released yet because I still need to do some polishing on it.
therealtrainfan119 19 Jan @ 9:20pm
and the ski gondola as well

wheres the mod for the 40ft steel and livestock G&D cars
ZombieJihad 19 Jan @ 2:26pm
ok thanks
SomeRailfan  [author] 18 Jan @ 8:20pm
The Sgt. Ennis spawns with the funnel disabled because it has two types of funnels. You can activate them the same way you would other custom models, with Shift+(number).
ZombieJihad 18 Jan @ 7:44pm
i am missing the sgt ennis funnel model, what mod do i need?
King of Monsters 9 Jan @ 3:15pm
ok

I love this, give us more like this!
SomeRailfan  [author] 3 Jan @ 1:58am
For the signs we just used the in-game posters. If you really need the exact PNGs you could pull them out the workshop download itself in your system files.
Danny252 3 Jan @ 1:44am
Is there a missing prop mod (or a dependency for it) for the G&D railroad signs, e.g. the one on the hillside near Cross Junction? I've had a look through the prop mod collection, but can't spot a prop that obviously matches it.
King of Monsters 28 Dec, 2024 @ 9:42am
O OK
SomeRailfan  [author] 28 Dec, 2024 @ 9:36am
This isn't something unique to this map, it's just the way that Rolling Line works.
SomeRailfan  [author] 28 Dec, 2024 @ 9:35am
Were you loading the map directly from the workshop save or did you save a separate copy? As I've said MANY times in this very comment section, if you save a local copy of the save it will not have all the mods packaged with it that the workshop save has. If you want the trains to load on your separate saves of the map you will need to subscribe to the mods yourself. Links to both the train collection and the prop collection are available in the description.

Unfortunately the low performance is more of an RL issue than a map issue. With maps this large the game tends to start struggling somewhat. It also depends on the specs of your PC. For example, I run a fairly high-tier rig and get a consistent 45-60 in most places, but we stress tested the map before release and 30 fps is more common for mid-tier PCs, which is in line with what you're describing.
IronH 17 Dec, 2024 @ 7:45pm
I remember being a young kid looking through my dad's old Model Railroader magazine collection and seeing this layout. Was and still is one of the greatest layouts ever created. Being able to explore it is a childhood dream, but as no one can ever see the original again, being able to explore it in RL is the next best thing. Thank you for all the hard work!

The only thing is it feels like it's always running at 30fps regardless of settings. eg my CPU/GPU are each running between 30-40% load with everything on max @1440p, Reducing the graphics settings doesn't help, eg setting everything to low/off doesn't increase fps, it keeps the same 30fps resulting in a lower 15-25% CPU/GPU load. RAM not an issue as it says I have 18GB free (I have 32GB total RAM). Monitor is running 180Hz and toggling Vsync on/off also makes no difference. Any ideas? or is this an RL optimisation / driver issue thing? Would love to explore this layout in VR but due to the low fps, not sure I want to try it.

Please say we'll get Zane Howard's "Piermont Division"

i think it is a cool map can you make a german map
RED onion 30 Nov, 2024 @ 9:57pm
There once was a mod of the G&D for Trainz back in the day. Glad the team has made one for a more recent game.
Rinston 30 Nov, 2024 @ 5:12am
This is incredible work, i'm absolutely blown away. I've made a few large layouts myself (that also took years) but this is on another level. Literally the height you have in this layout is stunning. Every part of it is interesting, and the custom assets, train mods and sounds, really great work.
DootGod 28 Nov, 2024 @ 6:16pm
Could you guys make a layout of Train Mountain Model Railroad Museum? Would be pretty neat
SomeRailfan  [author] 28 Nov, 2024 @ 11:31am
Again, saving the layout and loading it again later WILL break the save, but that is a known problem with Rolling Line. When you're creating a new save, it doesn't package all of the mods from the original save inside of it. So a good portion of them will not load. The best way to avoid this is to just use the original workshop save, that way everything will always be packaged correctly.
flyandive 28 Nov, 2024 @ 9:17am
I’m noticing the same thing Talyllyn No.1 is. If I load it from the workshop everything loads just fine, but if I save a session and go to load it later then many of the assets don’t load. The rail ferry, most of the trains, some of the bridge parts, etc. Absolutely fantastic layout and well worth the download but definitely a resource intensive layout.
ricprior 28 Nov, 2024 @ 3:29am
Amazing work guys - a true labour of love! Have just spent several hours simply riding around enjoying the views and discovering all of the hiking trail. As Brit I was totally unaware of John Allen and his huge contribution to model railroading, so thanks for opening my eyes.
Truly Awesome & Thensome!
judesrutherford 27 Nov, 2024 @ 4:28pm
Is the map based on any real life place like a state or (the real model railroad not the mod)
SomeRailfan  [author] 27 Nov, 2024 @ 1:07pm
@upqtrain While this layout is better optimized than some of our previous projects, it still requires at least a half decent PC to run at a stable framerate. Unfortunately if you've got a less powerful computer there's not much you can do.
SomeRailfan  [author] 27 Nov, 2024 @ 1:05pm
That's super odd. I'm not exactly sure how to help as you're the only person to report an issue like this. It almost sounds similar to an issue we were having before the latest RL patch, are you sure you're running the katest version of the game?
Talyllyn No.1 27 Nov, 2024 @ 12:17pm
@SomeRailfan I'm opening the map from the main-menu in Rolling line, as for what i'm missing, that's what I don't know, I've installed everything from the Collection on your page, but as mentioned, some things aren't appearing from what I can guess,

I'll give an example, on one of the large bridges there are just wagons sitting there, No engine to pull them with odd-spacing between trucks as if there should be more wagons between them.
CTW7435 27 Nov, 2024 @ 11:32am
:O
i just opened steam and i see this
upqtrain 27 Nov, 2024 @ 11:13am
I love it. However it takes a long while to load. Then it all runs very slow and movement around the layout is almost frame by frame delayed. What are the requirments for it to run. maybe I set it up wrong. any ideas?
SomeRailfan  [author] 27 Nov, 2024 @ 8:27am
Oh, that would be the custom sky color we used. You can disable it by going over to the menu where you change the weather, then you should be able to set it to night.
ExodusGravemind 27 Nov, 2024 @ 8:04am
Incredible work. If only JA himself were still alive to see it. Just one question though, how do I get the time of day to change in miniature mode? It's stuck on midday.
WoodenTrainz2009 27 Nov, 2024 @ 3:56am
i am honestly surprised how good this is! well done. i am happy cygnus also contributed, since i like his creations.
SomeRailfan  [author] 26 Nov, 2024 @ 5:49pm
Hmmm, what mods in particular are missing? Are you loading up directly from the workshop save or have you made a separate save of the map? If you made a separate save then some mods that were packaged with the map will not transfer over.
