we love an omni-gendered queen, time to do a "good" cannibal run because we have to butcher the corpses or they'll get back up and its only reasonable to make use of the resulting resources out here on the rim run

It would be nifty if - instead of a story teller, this was a thing you could enable for any story teller, so you could use this feature with a different 'base' than Randy.

who is this rando? it’s the original author, that’s who.

good work Zal!

onto the matter of what I’ve written (what are words, even?)- yes, the pronoun switching is deliberate, it’s reflective of his personality. she is genderfluid, that’s his character.

also, Daji’s xenotype is intersex, so funny thing Zal…
CeasarCheeser 22 Nov, 2024 @ 2:59pm
Regarding the use of pronouns, whether they’re used 'correctly' or not, it comes down to what the mod author thinks. If the author doesn’t mind what you change in the mod, then oh well—do as you please. But if they do care, then simply follow their wishes. This mod is an update of the original or rather just one of the storytellers taken out of the other mod, so if the original creator wants changes, just respect their preferences and make them. There’s nothing more to say about it unless you just want to argue endlessly over nothing.
CeasarCheeser 22 Nov, 2024 @ 2:33pm
Truthfully, does any of this matter? This is a storyteller mod for RimWorld, a game infamous for war crimes, cannibalism, and literal slavery. I honestly don’t see the point of arguing over 'they,' 'them,' 'she,' 'he,' or any other old or new pronouns people use daily—it’s irrelevant in a game where most players view pawns as nothing more than guinea pigs or resources ripe for harvest.
Whether you prefer old pronouns or new ones, it doesn’t matter. If the mod bothers you so much, just don’t download it. If it offends you that deeply, the solution is simple. AND IF it's so much of a problem and you still want to download the mod then just edit it in the files. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

EDIT: Also, Architect343, you know as well as I do, as a student of English, that I'm right about they as a singular being for unspecified individuals, because your argument wasn't that I was wrong, it was basically "IT'S THE CURRENT YEAR," which is a fallacy for a reason. The meaning of words can change, but English's grammatical structure has been largely static, at least as a general rule. Unlike Zal, who just doesn't care, you should know better, because I hope that you, as I do, value the English language and its formal use.

@Fallenscion

Why would I be ashamed? I'm not the one subjecting myself to humiliation rituals as " preferred pronouns," nor do I demand people pretend I'm not male, because I am not a narcissist or a madman. I stand by everything I've said here. The singular "they/their/them" DOES exist... for unspecified and unknown individuals. Not only is Daji a known individiual, the original author notes that she is a girl, because come on, it's pretty obvious.

Even the argument that language has changed since Shakespeare refers to things like the meaning of words changing, not grammatical structure. Pronouns have not changed in centuries: the Universal He ("all men" meaning "all people") is still grammatically correct, even if it has fallen out of use.

It's incorrect to say that the singular "they" does not exist. It does, and has existed for centuries. However, it is correct to identify a singular subject's sex by gendered pronouns, no matter how much it offends them.

@Architect343

I viewed the original Mod maker's description myself, and it very much does say "every resurrection SHE performs" when describing Daji. Even if you subscribe to pronoun humiliation rituals, in which men can outright lie and then expect others to conform to their insanity, that doesn't make a specified individual a "they," and far less importantly, you are going against the pronouns that the original author applied to Daji.

Not to mention, despite studying English on a professional and academic level, if you think "zer/zem" is real, you're part of the problem. English has gendered pronouns when an individual is specified, and just because that makes people butt hurt doesn't mean it's not grammatically incorrect.
fallenscion 22 Nov, 2024 @ 11:22am
@TurtleShroom - Are you sure your account has been recovered?

I'd be ashamed of throwing a tantrum over something as petty as a singular "their." Of all the things in the world to care about and you choose to get salty in the comments section over something that's both grammatically correct and fundamentally irrelevant.
Architect343 22 Nov, 2024 @ 11:11am
Hi, I have a masters degree in English and have studied the evolution of language since before shakespeare was born.

Given the original mod author's description of Daji and the lore behind the Yaoma, its pretty clear that the storytellers in that pack don't conform to gender norms and can use whatever pronouns they want. In fact, Daji's description on the original modpage uses "*his* fancy" meaning Daji, despite having a chest even i'm envious of, is not simply "a girl" as you have been having this asinine argument about, Shroom. Do you really think nothing's changed since shakespeare? If that's the case please unplug all your 21st century devices.

I for one would like to thank Zal both for updating this mod (great idea with the anomaly integration!) and for standing up against the ridiculousness in the rest of this comment section.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing what you update next :)
TurtleShroom 22 Nov, 2024 @ 10:32am
You actually care about madmen getting offended over ungrammatical pronouns? You are free to do this, I just recommend that you not submit to humiliation rituals out of fear that you could "offend" some narcissist who thinks it's cool to compel people to lie.
Zaljerem  [author] 22 Nov, 2024 @ 10:16am
In Zal's world, "they" CAN refer to an individual and it's the easiest way to avoid giving offense over pronouns, which many take very seriously these days.

For example, if you were swimming in the ocean, and started to drown, I could scream at the lifeguard, "Hey! They need help!" just as easily as "Hey! He needs help!" and they would understand just the same.

Nazi tendencies of any type should be avoided.
TurtleShroom 22 Nov, 2024 @ 9:56am
Again, you are my friend and I enjoy your company, so please don't take my comments to mean you are dumb or anything. As for why I care, when I write, I just tend to be a Grammar Nazi, and people constantly get pronouns wrong these days. It's jarring to see a picture of a beautiful woman and then you write "they're," despite the singular they only existing in the event of an unspecified individual.

Also, are you alright? It's not like you to snap at people. I hope you are doing okay.
TurtleShroom 22 Nov, 2024 @ 9:54am
I sincerely apologize, I had no intention of implying you are stupid! I hope you can forgive me if I came across that way!
Zaljerem  [author] 22 Nov, 2024 @ 9:54am
For all any of us know, they're hiding a gigantic phallus under their robes. Why, exactly, do you give a shit? Move along please.
Zaljerem  [author] 22 Nov, 2024 @ 9:50am
Language is living, moving, and evolving. Does the way I use that word detract from the clarity of the description? If it offends your sensibilities for some other reason, I suggest that that is your problem, not mine. I'm just an un-educated peasant; do you think I care about your or anyone else's definitions of grammar?
TurtleShroom 22 Nov, 2024 @ 9:46am
You made a bit of a grammatical error. "They" can be singular in only one specific case, and has been this way since Shakespeare. "Their," as in the singular they, is used in English only for an unspecified, unidentified person (e.g. "someone seems to have forgotten their umbrella"). Once the person is identified and known, only gendered pronouns are grammatically correct.

Given Daji's massive... assortment of Events and C-Sharp code, I'd say Daji is a girl.
